Mangaluru: Vehicle registrations rise leading to increase in accidents, demand for parking space

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (DV)

Mangaluru, Jul 19: With the registration of new two-wheelers and four-wheelers rising in the last three years, commoners are suffering the brunt of dense traffic in the city. The rise in number has also compounded the parking problem within the city. Also, reckless driving of buses and the negligence of pedestrians has also led to an increase in road accidents.

Though the police have taken several measures to ensure the free flow of traffic, it is increasingly becoming difficult for the department to control traffic at prominent junctions. In spite of the fact that Mangaluru is getting spruced up as a ‘Smart City’, it remains a challenge for the police to control heavy movement of vehicular traffic and meagre space available for parking within the city.

Commuters and motorists are therefore forced to park their vehicles on the road at several places in the city. Some are parking their vehicles on the roadside or on the footpath even in the ‘no parking’ zones. As the city lacks proper parking facility even in commercial complexes, many of them are parking their vehicles on the roadside. The pedestrians are thus left with little space to walk or for that matter park their vehicles properly.

The issue of parking has been discussed in the Mangaluru City Corporation council meeting.

Increase in the number of registration of vehicles

As per information available with regional transport office, in 2022-23, as many as 43,356 vehicles got registered including four-wheelers, two-wheelers and goods carriers, which is an increase over previous years.

According to sources in the Mangaluru RTO, in 2022-23, as many as 29,611 two-wheelers, and 9,431 motor cars were registered. During this period 1,503 goods carriers and 2,185 three-wheelers were also registered.

In 2021-22, as many as 23,612 two-wheelers and 7,687 cars were registered.

As traffic has increased in the city, negligent driving has also risen leading to rise in the number of deaths. In 2023 (January to June) as many as 485 accidents were reported under the Mangaluru police commissionerate limits of which 79 of them were fatal. Many were injured in accidents.

See the statistics; only sale of high end vehicles is growing whereas entry level vehicle sales are negative to stagnant indicating that the common man is still struggling to make a decent living! 10% of the people hold 75% of the country's wealth!

The only solution is to develop infrastructure for comfortable and low cost mass transportation system like which has been developed in Mumbai; this will dissuade public from using cars, reduce fuel consumption and dramatically improve air quality; electric a.c. buses should be started for point to point service! I'm Mumbai one can travel in the comfort of single and double decker a.c. buses at a very low cost, which have weaned many car owners towards them! Now the new underground railway using latest trains from Colaba to Seepz will reduce atleast 5L card off the roads!! If the same trend of increasingly vehicles continues here, it will be like Bangalore in a short time! BTW, in some advanced countries public transportation is totally free or heavily subsidised!

If police along with the elected representatives are intrested can change the scenario of traffic problem and parking problem. Stop all out station private buses from Pumpwell, Kottra Chowki, Kulshekar entering the Mangalore town and see the difference. Use the footpath only for pedestrians and not for vehicles to park or vendors to keep their merchandise. There is no difference after the smart city idea has come to force, it is only to fool people.

Increase in registrations signifies affluence; some families may own two or three cars; multiple car ownership should be controlled by higher registration and road taxces. There are limits to road expansion; widening is almost impossible within cities. Pedstrian fatalities; car crashes, etc., are iinevitable.

Bring a metro train to Mangalore, traffic congestion and parking problems will disappear, accidents will reduce and lives saved. Citizens can travel in AC comfort, fast , safe and cheap (not free). But nobody will get commission, so nobody interested.

With the rise in demand for parking space the authorities concerned should restrict building owners from giving " Reserved parking " space to big companies and corporates in Mangalore. There are many instances where the security personnel and office personnel behave rudely if vehicles are parked in " Reserved parking " which is actually public parking

If the vehicles registration is raised means a good sign. BUT IF OUR TRAFFIC POLICE DEPARTMENT IS STRICT , PARKING PROBLEMS CAN BE SOLVED WITHIN A DAY. Start booking vehicles where parked in not marked areas, automatically vehicles owners will alert. Traffic department must give target to every police on duty to book atleast 20 vehicles everyday minimum, and give those Police promotion for those who book more after a period of 6 months.
