Mangalore, Aug 5: In the past, there had been instances of thieves approaching train passengers in the guise of making friends, offering drinks or food laced with intoxicants, and then taking away the belongings of the unsuspecting passengers once they lose consciousness.

Surprisingly, the looters have extended this strategy to buses, and a bus passenger who consumed the things offered by them, not only lost everything on his person, but also turned very weak.

Vishwanath Shetty (36) from Kumble in Kasargod district, had boarded a Volvo bus being operated by a private bus operator, at Malad, Mumbai on Wednesday afternoon. When the bus reached the city on Thursday morning, he remained still in his seat. The bus staff, who tried to wake him up, found that he was semiconscious. He could not move his limbs, and could not speak. The bus staff then found a mobile phone in his shirt pocket and called his wife, Latha. The family members of Shetty then reached Pumpwell in the city where the bus had been parked, and admitted Shetty into nearby private hospital.

The bus employees said Shetty had got down at Bhatkal and had tea there. It is thought that one of the passengers of the bus would have offered him food mixed with drugs and robbed him once he slipped into unconscious state.

The family members of Shetty found that everything Vishwanath Shetty had with him, except the dresses on his body and the mobile phone, had been robbed. Two gold rings, a gold chain, cash, and his luggage have gone missing. As Shetty is not in a position to speak, the things he has lost could not be properly listed.

The family is yet to file a police complaint, as they have to provide details of what happened and what items have been lost. Shetty, who has been working in a hotel in Mumbai since the last 12 years, was returning home for attending Nagara Panchami celebrations. He was married about 18 months back. More details about the incident are likely to come out later today once Shetty is able to speak.

For Bus Operators - Makes sense to invest in CCTV cameras which arent very expensive and are also small in size. All public transport vehicles in the West have this .A CCTV camera here ,would have been helpful in nabbing the culprit

For passengers - Never accept anything to eat or drink from strangers

    DEAR ALL,

KINDLY NOTE THAT THIS WAS ALWAYS HAPPENING IN PUBLIC TRANSPORT LIKE RAILWAYS BUT THIS HAS STARTED IN PRIVATE BUSES.
THIS IS ALL HAPPENING BECAUSE OF THE DRIVERS AND CLEANER WHO ARE MAKE A FAST BUCK BY PICKING PASSENGERS ON THE ROAD AND ALSO IN THE JUNGLE AREA.

THIS IS A BIG RISK WHO KNOWS HE MIGHT BE A TERRORIST OR A BANDIT WHO WILL ENTER THE BUS AND TAKE ALL THE PASSENGER HOSTAGES.

THE BUS OWNERS SHOULD STOP THIS PRACTICE FOR THE SAFETY OF ALL PASSENGERS WHO ARE PAYING THEIR FULL FARE AFTER BOOKING THEIR TICKETS WELL IN ADVANCE FOR RECOGNIZED AGENTS.

OWNERS OF ALL PRIVATE BUSES AND ALL WHO TRAVEL BY THESE PRIVATE BUSES BE AWARE AND FIGHT FOR THIS CAUSE.

    YOURS WELL WISHER
    PASSENGER

Anything can happen in this country. Only thing we can do is we should be extra careful while on travel. We must refuse if some one offers any eatables, drinks, evn shlould not move closly with stranger passengers. Luckily, the stranger did not mix poision in his food.

Its not fair to put the blame on conductors.Definitely they will not do it coz...they work for company.Probably the man(thief) was following shetty right from malad.and we dont know what luggage he had. Yes, of course if the counterslip of luggage is not verified while taking out luggage, we can suspect conductor.

Sad to know these things are increasing day by day. If they are state level looters they may be inspired by Yeddys and Reddys. If not to the national level then Kalmadys and Rajas. Any level of crime Aam Admi lost all things.

Sad to see such a young energetic man lying in the hospital losing all his valuables.what Mr Dharma has commented is correct that the bus conductor should be held responsible is bcoz he is the one who informs the stranger about the belongings of the passenger and also helps the stranger to unload the luggage ,other wise how will the stranger take away somebody's things and alights the bus before it comes to the last stop, without knowing who's is it.

Truly said by Mr dharma, The bus conductor, and driver have to made respnsible for this,
Bus journey is not like train journey
the fact is that the drivers and conductors pick up the passenger from anywhere, whose details cannot be found out if they have picked up in the middle.
if the culprit has booked the ticket from the authorized agent can be traced by the police from the given details, and if the culprit has boarded the bus without booking the ticket by paying the amount to the conductor or the driver, who's details are not available anywhere? why daijiworld has not mentioned the name of the bus? it would have been better for the public to avoid these buses

Hope and pray this gentleman regains his health soon! It is shocking that drugging innocent passengers has extended to private buses running the Mumbai-Mangalore route, which till now were very safe. This gentleman was probably targeted for the jewelery he had on him. Some robber marked him, befreinded him, and relieved him of his belongings!!! As somebody has already commented it is best to not exhibit any jewels or costly gizmos and attract these criminals. This is more valid for young women and children who travel unaccompanied!!

Though such kind of incident were rare in the Mumbai-Mangalore bus services route, there could be a chance the staff of the bus also directly or indirectly responsible/involved .Police has to book conductor and driver of the bus and make them to pay what this "Smart" gentleman lost. With out the knowledge of the Bus staff, certainly there could not be any such robberies.ELLIYAVAREGE FOOL AAGUVAVARU IDDAREALLIYAVAREGE FOOL MADUVAVARU IDDARE.

OMG tears rolled when I looked at this young gentleman in this state. How cruel can human kind be? Do the robbers value life or just see jwellery/valuables and sedate their targets with dangerous drinks-which can be fatal too. He is someone's brother, a son, a husband - very very sad. He looks like a healthy strong young man to survive the drugs but imagine what would happen to helpless women/children who are travelling alone - may god put some feelings in the hearts of these criminals.
