Mangaluru, Aug 17: With a sudden surge in conjunctivitis cases, the district health officer (DHO) Dr Kishore Kumar has advised the public to stay cautious and recommended seeking medical advice immediately if any symptoms of conjunctivitis are observed.
Speaking to daijiworld, he said, “As many as 504 cases of conjunctivitis have been reported in the district in which a few have recovered. It spreads through a virus or bacteria where eyes turn reddish and there will be watery discharge leading to irritation in the eyes. If the pain increases in the eye due to conjunctivitis, the same will spread to neck and head as well.
“Those suffering from conjunctivitis need to take preventive measures. They should clean the watery discharge using a clean towel which should not be used by anyone else. When there is irritation, avoid rubbing the eye or else one can end up with a swollen eye.
“Wear dark glasses which will help one sustain discomfort in bright environments. If a child or student suffers from conjunctivitis, it is better to take rest at home for 2 days. The same is advisable for working professional.
“If the infection stays for a week or more, there are chances of the cornea getting effected. Hence, we need to avoid rubbing the eyes if there is irritation. The treatment is available in all hospitals and PHCs. One can consult the doctors if further treatment is needed.
“We have advised the DDPI to create awareness in schools and colleges about conjunctivitis. Hence it is better for everyone take preventive measures,” he said.
