Mangaluru: Conductor's death - Owners instructed to have entry-exit doors in bus

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Aug 30: In the wake of a devastating incident involving the unfortunate death of a conductor, police commissioner Kuldeep Kumar Jain has provided crucial advice to bus owners to enhance passenger safety and prevent further tragedies. The recommendations come as a proactive response to the incident and highlight the importance of prioritizing safety over speed and convenience.

Jain's first suggestion is for buses to install doors, a measure that can significantly mitigate the risk of passengers falling off moving vehicles. This step is anticipated to enhance the overall safety of passengers, particularly during sudden maneuvers or stops.

In addition, commissioner Jain strongly emphasized that under no circumstances should anyone be allowed to stand on the footboard of the buses. This directive includes conductors, who are traditionally seen hanging onto the footboard while performing their duties. The prohibition of this practice aims to prevent any untoward incidents and protect the lives of both passengers and conductors.

Rather than fixating solely on punctuality or reaching on time, the commissioner has urged the bus owners to shift their focus towards ensuring the safety of their passengers. He stressed that adhering to schedules should not come at the expense of neglecting safety protocols. By adopting a safety-first approach, bus operators can contribute to a safer commuting environment for everyone.

RTO should install CCTV (wireless, with SIM card) in all private buses to monitor footboard travel. Set up a control room to continuously monitor all these CCTVs. If CCTV is not operational stop the bus from running until CCTV is repaired by the bus owner. Charge private bus owners for cost of CCTV and control room. CCTV should also be installed in all bus stops to monitor bus arrivals/departures.

The speed of the bus should be regulated. The bus drivers literally drive as if they are flying on the road and honk unnecessarily and do not bother to see if the passenger has boarded or gotten off from the bus...Just right poi is their slang

Either scrap this private city bus service and introduce government service or make all private bus owners work as a co-operative and share in the costs and profits. This will put an end to reckless and crazy driving and unwanted competition and bring in optimum utilization of the available fleet and cut down unwanted expenses.

Measures are taken only when such incidents happen. There should be preventive actions instead of corrective actions in safety. In India safety is given the least priority. Constant education about safety, first aid, CPR and how to avert any accidents or otherwise, corporate social responsibility programs towards these causes is need of the hour. Indians are only busy in fighting over religion, while they should focus on well being.

I travel in this bus everyday evening.this conductor does not allow either to get in or get down...I used to wonder then why running the bus if he is always in a hurry.. every day he will be grumbling at passengers...He expected every one to jump as soon as bus stops...the same thing he too wanted probably when thebus stop was closer by.... usually he used to b on steps...always screeming , shouting, whistling, and very restless..ond day even I would have had a fall because of his negligence .All should follow 27 route bus style.. also conductors need proper training in behaving with passengers... May God grant his family members strength to bear the loss.

Tragic incident. But it was distressing to see the policeman handling the injured person without any basic knowledge of first aid. In such incidents, supporting the neck and spine is extremely important before moving the casualty. Are the traffic police trained in first aid and life support? They should be.

Very sad for this unfortunate incident. This precious life is lost because of our stupid system and management. If proper or rather say normal criteria is followed such things can never happen. We need change in the following: Bus to start when passengers sit comfortably. Senior citizen should be given priority to sit. Steps of bus should be smaller. Both conductor and driver stop saying 'bega bega...…so irritating . But i dont blame them ..i blame the entire systemm

Good suggestion, There should be only 1 conductor in one bus, unnecessary gully boys, sitting in the back sit, creating noise with duty conductor, pressuring the passengers to getup & Down in hurry. bus should stop properly in one stop. THER SHOULD BE ONLY ONE CONDUCTOR IN 1 BUS. he must be trained, specially day to day rules, first aid training, and should be at lest 10 std he must have studied.

Basically, India is very backward technically and where public transportation trains, buses, and taxis are concerned the safety features are zero and nothing more to say about the safety of bad roads! Modern day Metro trains and Government and private state to state buses are very modern and safe. However, safety is not one sided. People too should understand the value of life and not risk it due to lack of time , instead of expecting the Transport Dept. studying safety measures and availability in India of good quality and highly secure buses and trains, or expecting private bus owners investing in expensive modern safe Volvo, Mercedes, and Scania buses. The very fact that the Police Commission of Mangalore is highlighting the safety concerns will let you know that nothing will transpire because of this one issue which cannot be classified as an accident. If you see how these conductors hang and jump from the rear door to the front door and vice versa, only they are to blame for a death, and not the poor safety feature of the bus or the bad roads that are existing since Gandhiji! Take for example the case of shrill horns and high boarding steps that has been highlighted a million times in media and checked by the Police and Transport Dept., but nothing has changed to date. May be this new Police Commissioner is not aware of. Many have come and gone but no one can change the local issues nor the locals! What is truly required is to conduct safety and technical checks at the bus terminals, as the agents who pass these buses through the Transport Dept, is all bribe based, which is a norm in India with all authorities from the Police to Politics, its very Indian and no one can change this Indian concept.

Nobody is worried about the height of the foot board . In state owned buses the height of the footboard is in correct height. Our so called R T Os are not concerned. It is very difficult for senior citizens and also for children to get into the bus. We would be grateful to the concerned authorities to look into this matter immediately and do the needful

Good work commisioner. But please give some tooth and nail. Make it compulsory and not as advisory. And those who do not comply impose hefty fine. Specially during morning rush hour make police personnel stand in different places to curb footboard travelling by imposing heavy fines to both bus operator, conductor, driver and also to the passenger hanging from foot board.

Why is the police not getting strict with rules for bus operators? Giving them suggestions instead of making it a rule doesn't seem right. If police is letting private bus to operate like this then it's danger for every citizen of Mangalore.

Saddened at the Loss of a Life .... All that the Authorities have to do is ensure that these Buses do not stop in between Stops. They should not be allowed to wait at Stops for more Time than necessary i.e Drop the Passengers, Pickup the Passengers and drive away... I am a regular user of these Buses ..Express/Service and City...They wait atleast a Minuite more at major stops and then on seeing their Competitor approaching fly away to the next stop.. Since their Timing has to be maintained they drive at breakneck speeds and recklessly , putting the Lives of Pedestrians and Motorists at great Risk... Last but not the least,,,,instal Speed governors.... Clamp down heavily on these errant Drivers...they stop in the middle of the Roads and never in the Bus bays designed for them...Unofficial Busstops are noticed every Hundred metres within the City limits.....

Installing doors is a good measure to prevent falls from moving buses. If doors are not installed both passengers and conductors should be fined for standing on footboards.

I travel by bus everyday (home to work and vice versa) and the limited number of some routes literally make the public force themselves on to buses to go to work, school, college and hospital etc. Buses pass the eyes of our traffic police. While I should blame them for not enforcing the no standing on the steps and hang out the bus - they themselves face the wrath of the public for doing their job. While our commissioner is pro traffic reform which is very much applaudable the people have to reach their destination. If Mangalore either had more public buses or private on bus limited routes this would literally help. Might not stop the romeos and heroes but atleast then the police would be able to do their job and the public could jump on the non law abiding riders

During my high school and college years, I often stood on the footboard of the bus while travelling. If the bus was crowded, I would sometimes use the back ladder. Looking back, those were some cherished memories, even though I am now 50 years old.
