Udupi, Aug 10: Two students studying in Manipal University Manipal, drowned while trying to swim in the sea on Wednesday August 10 evening. Abhijeet Singh(18), from Chandigarh, who is a student of Manipal Institute of Technology, and Jana Kish (21), a citizen of Macedonia, lost their lives in the incident. The tragedy occurred at around 3.30 pm. It is learnt that Jana Kish had come to Manipal in July for internship under Student Exchange Scheme, from Bangalore.

Immediately after the incident, local divers like Dayanand Suvarna, Deepak Kotian, and Shekhar Suvarna, ventured into the sea. They recovered the body of the girl student within a short time thereafter. Search for the body of Abhijeet is continuing.

The two were from among a group of five students from Manipal, who came to Kaup beach for fun and frolic. Four among them were foreigners, and Abhijeet was the only Indian in the group. Initially, all the five had entered the sea near the Light House Kaup, but three of them came back and preferred to sit on the shore, after growing fearsome about the turbulent sea. Abhijeet and Jana were the only students from among the group to continue to swim in the sea.

The locals said they had warned the group not to enter the sea because of the high tide. They revealed that the group overlooked their repeated warnings. The incident brought to the fore the immediate need to deploy life guards and life jackets at the beach at Kaup, demand for which had been frequently made to the department of tourism in the past. Every year, a number of lives are lost in the beach, because of the adventurism of the young visitors.

Kaup circle inspector, Cheluvaraju, visited the spot. The policemen have registered a case. Officials of Manipal University also arrived at the spot.

My brother was there in the cremation of Abhijeet bhaiya whose body was recovered yesterday around 4.15 p.m, 4 kilometres away from the beach. The last rights of Abhijeet bhaiya were performed today in the presence of his family members and large number of college colleagues. My heart felt condolences to the bereaved family and friends to bear this unbearable loss. Could somebody in Macedonia from Jana's family help or assist in getting back to her native city for similar last rights-she still lays in the mortuary.
May their souls rest in peace.

NO reason to blame any public officials. There is a clear warning sign in the entry of the beach saying DO NOT SWIM.

When we know there s a big ditch straight ahead in the road we are travelling we shall have the common sense not to continue with it.thats what has happened here and sorry for these victims. The beaches need to be more secured..better need to implement teh same system as the beached in Goa with the lifeguards available 24x7.Probably it could be safer and save lives.

We have so many people working in as govt employees.. Why dont they employ few people as life guards in all public beaches. All the Govt salaries are from the public money..How many more lifes should we lose for this dumb Govt to realise the value of Human beings.

Lack of caution stems from an age old attitude "Arre chalta hai, kuch nahi hoga". I know there were foreigners in this group but there was also an Indian boy. As a Society we must have the courage to give utmost priority to safety concerns even if we are discouraged or made fun of by our colleagues, friends or neighbours. Also, we must not hesitate or show apathy towards talking openly about safety concerns, not just after a tragedy has happened but before a perilous situation can confront us. We must not feel embarassed to openly speak about safety concerns thinking that others might think we are 'scared'. Remember words of wisdom, "Prevention is better than cure" & "Better safe than sorry". Condolences to the families of the two students who lost their lives.

Sad to know abt the 2 MIT'ians death. RIP..

Dave. What you have said to a big extent is true.It just requires seconds for the sea currents to take inexperienced swimmers lives away.I have seen myself how people play dangerously in such waters. Authorities should put BIG boards with legible warnings on Malpe/Kaup/Surathkal beaches where outsiders try their luck in the appealing waters. People who try Such swimming especially after having drinks are more prone to such accidents.

    Sad but preventable accident.
When I was student, Navy instructors who came to teach us in NCC, had taught us-
If u can swim for a Kilometer in river then U can only swim for 10 meters in sea in normal times. The waves just swap your energy within minutes.
Donot venture into sea during monsoons as the sea will be very rough even when its not raining. The under sea currents will be 10 times stronger than in any other times. Even expert swimmers will get tired or get cramped in cold waters of sea & most likely to drown.
As these students were from Punjab & Macedonia where sea is not nearby they donot know these facts & its waters just attracts them to swim with its inherent dangers hidden, during monsoons.

Why the youth venture into the sea or to the rivers/lakes? why the youth do not realize that, it is not safe at all. just enjoy the beauty from far. High risk involved in getting into the water. God save all !
