Mangalore, Aug 11: What better way to commemorate the 'International Year of Forests - 2011' than distributing plant saplings to students while taking an oath to safeguard nature by planting them?
St Agnes Pre - Univeristy College, here observed ‘international Year of Forests – 2011’ in a meaningful way by distributing saplings to students on Thursday August 11.
Eco club ‘Srishti’ of St Agnes PU College also organized an exhibition on ‘Forests for People’ at the college auditorium which was inaugurated by deputy conservator of forests O Palaiah (IFS).
Students of the college displayed ‘dangers caused to the nature by mining’ in the exhibition. It drew the attention of many as it was a mockery of human approach to nature today. Students attempted to gain practical knowledge about farming in contour farming, terrace cultivation, organic farming, organic compost and other such methods.
Addressing the students, Palaiah said that out of the 23 percent of geographical area across India covered with forests, 17 % of it is in Karnataka. However the figures has come down in recent years with the vast deforestation causing an imbalance in the eco-system. He added that the exhibition helped to shed light on the awareness to be created among youth on natural conservation.
Co-ordinator of Eco club 'Srishti' Suvasini P, principal of the college M Shamita A C, principal among others were present.
