Beltangady, Sep 26: Locals living in the vicinity of Dhumbettu Kaje of Mundaje village are scared as a herd of wild elephants was seen wandering around the village at around 7.30 pm of Sunday.

As soon as the villagers saw the pachyderms entering the farmland, they burst crackers and lit fire to drive the herd back into the forest. After destroying the arecanut trees and plantains of Sudhakara and Sundara Gowda, the elephants went towards Panikallu forest. Locals said that there were three elephants including a baby elephant.

There is an elephant trench at Dhumbettu Naleelu connection area. However around 20 to 30 meters of area does not have the trench. There is a river that flows nearby also. It is possible that the herd might have crossed the river and entered the village. The villagers say that the elephant trench needs to be completed on the 20 to 30 meters of area that is left without digging the trench.
