Karnataka bandh: Dakshina Kannada, Udupi to express only 'moral' support

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru/Udupi (MS)

Mangaluru/Udupi, Sep 29: Chances of response in twin districts of coastal region to the Karnataka Bandh call given by various organizations in protest against releasing of Cavery river water to Tamil Nadu on September 29 is very slim.

Most of the organizations in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi have expressed only moral support to the bandh. The government, private buses, taxi and auto-rickshaws will run as usual. As no one has asked to close hotels and shops, they will also be open as usual. No holiday is declared to schools and colleges.

Azeez Partipadi, president of Dakshina Kannada bus owners’ association said that they also want the welfare of the farmers of the state. However, due to bandh, the daily life of commoners will be affected. Hence, all the buses will run as usual.

Kudpi Jagadish Shenoy, president of Dakshina Kannada hotel owners’ association, said, “We are concerned about the depleting water level in Netravati as it will affect our business.”

Irodi Sahanasheela Pai, president of Udupi district merchants’ association said that they will close the establishments only if there is external pressure.

This nationalist approach is right. Water problem is everywhere. Moral support is all we can provide because, our politicians work on their investment based on 5-year plan. It is same in Karnataka as in TN and rest of India. It is a joke that Courts are being mechanical with colonial agreements bereft of logic. The emerging superpower better provide drinking water and water that enables food growth and wake up today and now to this urgent and genuine problem. Bandh etc., are nonsense especially when DMK and Congress share the same platform and make it political because opposition in Karnataka is in power in Delhi. This problem is beyond that.

Karnataka itself is a mix of difference cultures of marathi, nizam, mysore and south canara(madras presidency). Kannadigas are just over 50% . So a majority support is not viable when it comes to peoples need.

Only when BD calls for a bandh it's a success in coastal Karnataka. Any other bandh calls no effect at all

Coastal districts and other districts are entirely different worlds when it comes to Cauvery water issue... Only moral support is possible as pain is not really felt... Moreover bandhs will not solve any problems... In fact they add to people's problems... It is not that govt is playing the bad boy role... They are at the receiving end at the very start of their innings due to rain Gods... Only hope is return monsoon may provide some fillip...

Even when we feel the pain, we do not call for a bandh. It just isn't there in our mindset. We may complain, abuse but somehow the mentality here is to keep silent and get on with our work. There are pros and cons but our motto is 'swalpa adjust maadi'. We never stand up for what we deserve it's like who will waste that time running around to get things done. Only because of politics one will find some commotion for some issue but usually the common man will never go for such things.

it is really funny that dk and udupi are not considered as one with other parts of karu nadu..the culture also is different and the mindset is totally seperate...with Yettinahole project people of dk and udupi are more agitated towards other people of karunadu...the same happens in rest of karu nadu as they dont care to what happens in coastal districts..

Absolutely. in some ways its scary also right. I mean you look at the diversity in just one state within this country. Coastal district mindset is different from malenadu which is different from Bangalore/Mysore which is different from Coastal District. Round and round. Sometimes I think its a miracle how we still have managed to live and move together with all this diversity in language, arts, customs, culture etc. India is truly amazing!
