Moodbidri, Aug 19:
India’s hockey legend Dhanaraj Pillai was the star attraction and the cynosure of all eyes at the recent Independence Day celebrations at Bhootanateshwar temple, Mijar, near here.

He inspired the participants of the half marathon with cash awards of Rs 7 lac and mingled with them. The half marathon was organized by sports enthusiast Vijayanath Shetty. Pillai urged Shetty to organize a mini hockey tournament shortly.

Dhanaraj Pillai, a recipient of the Padmashree, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, and Arjuna Awards, took some time off to exclusively talk to this reporter.

Here is an excerpt:

What do you think is the future of Indian hockey team at the international level?

Pillai:
The Indian hockey team that reigned supreme for many years had to struggle to maintain its world ranking. However, there are all signs that the Indian hockey team will excel.

What is the state of affairs in Indian Hockey?

Pillai: The Federation has to study the workings of BCCI in designing training modules, with due emphasis on modernization and encouraging talent.

What’s your view about the achievements of the Indian hockey team?

Pillai: The hockey players who brought laurels to India deserve the same honour that Indian cricketers enjoy. The achievements of Dada Dhyanchand are equal to that of cricketer Sachin Tendulkar. The hockey players deserve an honour equal to cricketers.

How was your experience in Mangalore and with the local people?

Pillai: Mangaloreans have made their mark in metros across the country because they are known for their hard work. The organizing of a marathon in the rural town of Moodbidri indeed shows the love for sports that the local people have.
