Passenger tries to open emergency door before flight’s take-off; FIR slapped in Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Oct 02 (IANS): A man was taken into custody for allegedly attempting to open the emergency door of a flight before take-off. However, he was later released on bail.

Karnataka Police said on Monday that the incident had taken place on the Nagpur-Bengaluru Indigo flight 6E 6803 late on Saturday night, when the flight crew was briefing passengers.

The accused passenger, identified as Swapnil Holey was seated next to the emergency exit door, and tried to open it.

Bengaluru police detained him following a complaint by the airline staff. Police have booked him under IPC Section 336 for endangering the lives of others. He was given bail later.

The airline staff had taken him to the Bengaluru Airport police station after the flight reached Bengaluru International Airport at midnight on Saturday.

The accused passenger had booked a ticket to Bangkok on October 1. Further investigation is on.

Emergency doors have to open in seconds. So it is kept ready just before departure. There is a gas canister which fills the escape chute with air in approximately 5 seconds. Once fired the aircraft has to be fitted with a new escape chute. Old people and disabled are not seated at the emergency doors because it a bit of an effort to open them. That's why cabin crew, before the flight enquire with the passengers if they can manage an emergency and if one is unsuitable to be seated there change seats with a healthier person who can handle an emergency and agrees. Airline staff work in different departments and not everyone is trained for such situations. Engineering staff are more or less familiar with the emergency doors.

This is definitely a very close knit relative of the Mahan Tejaswi Surya. Do we have a Annamalai in this tory who later backed saying it was the plane and not the passenger?

Seats near Doors / Emergency Doors should be allotted to only Airline Staff if they are travelling on business or vacation. There's an advantage here, sirline staff will handle an emergency by helping the duty crew. If airline staff not available, the allott the door seats to senior citizens.

Why no FIR on surya? If action was taken against him people would not have been dared to open the emergency door.

He must have thought nothing wrong in testing before takeoff. What if it doesn't open during an emergency? So he was released on bail.
