Mangaluru, Oct 3: The process of tree cutting along NH 66 for the construction of flyovers at Nanthoor and KPT junctions has recently commenced, sparking concerns among environmentalists regarding the removal of fully grown trees.

Members of the Citizens for Sustainable Development group have voiced their objections to the tree cutting along the highway. They expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that permission had been granted despite objections from various environmentally friendly organizations. They had requested a thorough study before any trees were cut, but their appeals seemed to have fallen on deaf ears. According to them, the district administration, NHAI (National Highways Authority of India), and the Forest Department appear to show little concern for the environment.

“It is confirmed through RTI that there are technical flaws in the works that are planned by NHAI on Nanthoor and KPT flyovers. NHAI has not made proper arrangement in their plan for the rain water to flow. If the project is implemented as planned, citizens of Mangaluru will face problems in future. We drew the attention of district administration and district in charge minister in this regard. It is irony that without correcting the lacunas the project is being implemented,” they said.
