Mangaluru: Youths climb freedom fighter's statue, receive police notice

Mangaluru, Oct 3 (IANS): Karnataka police have issued notices to a group of youths for waving religious flags after climbing onto freedom fighter Rani Abbakka's statue in Ullal here, police said on Tuesday.

Holding green flags, the youths had climbed the statue at the Veera Rani Abbakka Circle in Ullal when the Eid Milad procession was being taken out on September 28.

The video of the incident had gone viral on social media and created outrage.

Jurisdictional Ullal police, taking a serious note of the incident, has collected the video footage.

They identified the youths and sent them a police notice to appear before the investigating officer.

Notably, hundreds of youths had climbed on the statue during the procession and allegedly behaved in a disrespectful manner.

They had also blocked the road and honked continuously causing a nuisance to the public, police said.

Since Mangaluru is a communally sensitive city, the police immediately swung to action and identified the youths from Manjanadi, Madaka, Bantwal, Beltangady, Deralakatte, Konaje and Ullal in Dakshina Kannada district.

The curfew orders have been clamped in Shivamogga City following the incident of stone pelting during the Eid Milad procession.

More than 40 people have been arrested in this regard.

what these youths have done is absolutely wrong...but if the same was done with saffron bhagwa flags then no question would have been raised....this is the kind of society we are living in...in fact British united us but now nagpur gulams are dividing the country....just let them off with warning...

But what was the motive in climbing the statue? I don’t think it was merely for fun. Of course similar processions are also taken out by other communities causing some inconvenience to traffic but definitely not at this level.

real kujuma kodial ,no kujuma, never with a warning but teach them a lesson for life not to do this with flags and climb over a statue of freedom fighter. They should respect it as any other.Their flags can be hoisted at their house or on a hill where birds and wind enjoy. They should learn something at this age ,otherwise land in jail. What was their aim?Why green flag?During procession?Did they any time took permission for it?To Marol Udipi, sure Procession to festival is ok but not nonsense such provoking vareity.Freedom to everyone ,but not not nuisence.

Each festival celebration take us closer to God and one another. Otherwise there is no use in festival celebration. God is divine and that divinity reflect in each one of us. Then only there is meaning for human life. Thank you and God bless each and every one of us.

This procession was going near my place of residence .... created real nuisance.... Couldn't understand the purpose of this.... Seemed like their cries/prayers were not reaching their creator.... Nobody should be allowed to create such nuisance in the name of celebrating ones festival/occasion.... The roads were blocked.... Looked more like mob out to invite violence
