Raipur, Aug 24 (IANS): A key accused in last April's Dantewada Maoist attack, in which 76 security personnel were killed, has died in a Chhattisgarh hospital, sources said Wednesday.

Gangraj, 41, died Tuesday at a government hospital here while doctors were preparing to remove a blood clot from his head, hospital sources said.

Gangraj was captured a month back in a densely forested pocket of Andhra Pradesh's Khammam district, Dantewada Superintendent of Police Ankit Garg told IANS.

"Gangraj was a weapon supplier mainly in Bastar. He supplied weapons for several deadly attacks in the region including those for the Dantewada massacre," Garg said.

Gangraj was first shifted to a Jagdalpur hospital from Dantewada district jail. About a week ago, he was rushed here as his condition continued to deteriorate, Garg added.

The Dantewada attack happened in Tarmetla village April 6, 2010. Heavily armed Maoists boxed in troopers of the Central Reserve Police Force (CPRF) 62nd battalion from all sides and wiped out 75 of them and a state policeman.
