Sharad Yadav asks Hazare supporters to be civil

New Delhi, Aug 27 (IANS) Janata Dal-United (JD-U) leader Sharad Yadav Saturday took a dig at some of Anna Hazare's supporters and associates, amidst roars of laughter from MPs in the Lok Sabha, as he cautioned the civil society representatives not to mock politicians.

Participating in a debate on the Lokpal issue, Sharad Yadav said the language some of the protesters at Ramlila Maidan were using against parliamentarians was "not worth repeating", noting that this had left a deep impact on him.

Wondering why the protesters were against parliament, he reminded Hazare's supporters that it was the same institution that had shown its "magnanimity" by urging the social activist to end his hunger strike.

"Remember, an injury from a bullet heals over time, but an injury caused by words does not," he said.

Urging protesters to remain civil and choose their words carefully, he said: "Please keep your words within limits and we shall also keep ours in limits."

"The situation has become so serious that a member of parliament was forced to de-board a train by other passengers... like Gandhiji was forced to do so. He had to take the next train," he said, to shouts of "shame, shame" from MPs in the house.

Yadav was about to conclude his speech, but other MPs urged him to continue and this made the JD-U leader more strident in his digs at Hazare's associate. However, he called the social activist as "an honest" person.

Calling Hazare's associates as new-found leaders, he said during his public life he had led protests himself but he had not seen such leaders who had no conviction about the cause for which they were fighting.

"On one side there is a baba, another is a Sri Sri Sri... 108 times, there is one who claims to be a sant, but looks like a filmy hero," he said, inviting peals of laughter around the house.

Yadav also lambasted Hindi film actor Om Puri for asking the voters to "keep the bottle and the cash, but don't give your vote" to politicians.

"Most protesters are attending a carnival. They roam about watching the fun, have snacks and head to Ramlila Maidan. There are others who are permanent protesters. If they see a rally of 20 or 50, they'll immediately join the crowd," he said.

The JD-U leader said there were several people in Parliament who had risen through struggle but there were a few whose fathers had been leaders.

"The country is being run by parliament... People here know what is agricultural land, what is people's pain, their compulsion... You are giving us lessons when you sit in the comfort of air conditioners," he said.

Yadav also had a word of criticism for Hazare, accusing him of not recalling leaders such as Mahatma Jyotiba Phule and B.R. Ambedkar, who too were from Maharashtra, but only mentioning Chhatrapati Shivaji, Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru.

However, the JD-U leader reiterated his party's support on all the three issues raised by Hazare, be it including lower bureacracy under Lokpal, public grievances redressal and Lokayuktas in states.
