Tamil Nadu Congress chief wants Rajiv killers hanged

Chennai, Aug 27 (IANS) Tamil Nadu Congress Chief K.V. Thangkabalu Saturday said the law should take its course in former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi's assassination case and the three persons sentenced to death should be hanged.

"There should be no travesty of justice," he told IANS. "If the convicted are allowed to go without punishment, there will be utter anarchy in the country. One cannot allow people coming from anywhere and killing people here."

On Aug 11, President Pratibha Patil rejected the mercy petitions of Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan - all linked to Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and sentenced to death for involvement in the 1991 assassination.

Leaders of various political parties, including Congress ally DMK, have demanded that the death sentences be overturned.

"Those who oppose the punishment are questioning the supremacy of the law," he said.

In a statement issued here, he said that already there have been several hindrances to carrying out the sentence and, at a time when it is to be executed, many outfits are trotting out with new reasons to stall it.

"Rajiv Gandhi was not (just) an individual," Thangkabalu said. "He was Congress president and former prime minister. He was killed in Tamil Nadu by a Tamil group. This fact is still burning in the heart of every Indian."

He asked of the politicians who demand that the death sentences be overturned: "Would the same partymen make a similar demand if their party leader was killed?"

He said the rule of law was central to democracy in the country.

A woman suicide bomber blew herself up killing Gandhi, prime minister of India from 1984 to 1989, at an election rally in Sriperumbudur near Chennai May 21, 1991.

In 1998, all the 26 accused in the case - including the three - were sentenced to die by a special trial court for Gandhi's killing.

In 1999, the Supreme Court confirmed the death sentences of four: Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan and Nalini, an Indian woman who had assisted the killer squad. The capital punishment of the others was reduced to varying terms of imprisonment.

The death sentence of Nalini, who became a mother in prison, was commuted to life imprisonment after her mercy petition was accepted. The petition had the recommendation of Sonia Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi's widow.

Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan and the others were charged with criminal conspiracy that led to the killing.

Soon after the confirmation of their sentence, they made a mercy plea to the Indian president, which was rejected.

As an admirer of Mahatma Gandhi and the historic campaign
of the Indian Congress Party for Hind Swaraj, with this
year marking the 80th anniversary of the conclusion of the
Salt Campaign (1930-1931), I support the rights of the Tamil
people while opposing all assassinations and executions. It
was a tragic mistake in 1949 to hang Gandhiji's assassins, an act
contrary to the spirit of ahimsa and the universal
brotherhood and sisterhood of humanity for which he gave
    his life.

This mistake should not be repeated. I also
support the use of satyagraha, nonviolent truth-force, by
the Tamil people to win and defend their rights in Sri
Lanka and elsewhere. Each killing promotes the cycle of
violence and revenge each courageous refusal to kill is
step toward the peace and justice that Gandhiji sought.

Killing some one because he has killed some one two decades ago is totally absurd. Congress people will definitely demand that they should be hanged because it is the question of their survival. They have to keep on praising sonia to cover their corruption. ADMK and DMK both will not interfere because they fully depend on congress for their survival by covering up their corruption.
Anyhow they should not be hanged at any case and if they do it, it will only develop hatred in the minds of people of Tamil Nadu. The people of Tamil Nadu are also in need of one ANNA to save them.
The government of india happily handed over Katchatheyu which was an integral part of india to SriLanka for the reasons known only to cogress. But they are fighting for last 60 years and hesitate to hand over Kashmir to pakistan. We say Kashmir is an integral part of India but Kachathevu is also integral part of India. Any how let us hope that the congress will not hand over Tamil Nadu to Srilanka. The government should develop our Navy to match the might of the SriLankan Navy.

Your comments are totally irrelevant and illogical. There is no way tamil tigers cud have won the war by fighting it out in the current world by adopting sucidical attempts, killing lankan pm and other officials. They killed Rajiv gandhi which is absolutely wrong. See what happened to tamil movement in the end in sri lanka. These killers needs to be hanged for the heinous crime of killing the PM of the country. In the name of seperate Kalistan, their activists killed many sikh civilians which you are not bothered. You are only pointing out the actions by the govt headed by Mrs.Gandhi which was done in to control the unlawful activities and she paid the price in the line of duty. Nalini, the lady who was part of the group of killers is lucky to escape the nose thanks to Ms.sonia gandhi. If we have to go by your thinking, then we need to pardon afzal guru who attacked our parliament and kasab who killed innocent civilians which included some of my friends..So donot pass ive judgement based on ur convenience..Your attitude is like " hunt with the hound and run with the pack" which is unacceptable...

killing of rajivgandhi is correct, because he killed more than 25,000 tamils in ellam(northern srilanka)by sending 1,50,000 military from india
in the name of peace making force.so the revenge will be taken, the people of tamilnadu help them, this is not wrong(indiragandhi is killed by sikhs because she killed many sikhs in golden temple, so they take revenge and give a gift member of parliment(M.P)to her wife who killed indiraganthi)its correct in name of god.If sikhs do its correct but when tamilan do its wrong.if sikhs congress head will be afraid but for tamilan its think to put on his feet.after 20 years now only the congress taken this case and urged to hang Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan to threaten tamil people after they gave a powerful tiger punch in 2011 state election to congress.congress think tamilans are like buffallo and we can beat them continously by help of this pimp goldbalu, chidambaram, elangovan, etc.its the decision taken by central congress government, in the name of rule of law,we have no objecton in that, but we are worrying for the persons who are interested in this 3 persons hanging to death?

Rightly or wrongly Rajiv Gandhi was the cause behind the death of 13 top LTTE leaders who took to cyanide just before they were to be handed over to Sri Lankan savages by him. Of course Rajiv Gandhi is very dear to our heart because he is so very fair looking just as the rest of his family members are. However, it does not mean that those 13 LTTE leaders were loved less by their clansmen! For their alleged crime of being involved in the assasination of Sri Rajiv Gandhi they have already suffered 20 years in barbaric conditions in our jails. Now to hang them would be the cruelest thing which a civilized nation such as ours is not expected to do. I would say even in the case of Afzal Guru et al., they should not be hanged. After all they (the Pakistani trained gunmen) failed miserably in their mission of entering our parliament and eliminating our dear leaders who are alleged to have looted our nation and stashed away billions in Swiss banks, as ordered by Pakistan. If our leaders have any courage they should take on Pakistan for that and not their paid agents. What is the point in punishing the arrow forgetting the arm that made them shoot?
