Mangalore, Aug 27: Second year BSc student of St Aloysius College Sharanya Mahesh, a member of Mangalore Roller Skating Club, has been selected for the state Ekalavya Award for the year 2011.
She had recently participated at the 14th Asian Roller Skating Championships held at Kaohsiung City at Chinese Taipei and won two bronze medals.
Sharanya, trained by her father Mahesh Kumar, learnt skating at the age of 5. She has won several medals in various national and international events.
In 2010 she won the individual championship title at the 45th Nationals and gold medal at the 46th Nationals. She has also participated in World Roller Skating Championship in 2005, apart from achieving various other feats.
"I am delighted to learn that I have been selected for the state's prestigious award for skating. I am grateful to my parents, without whose support I could not have achieved this," Sharanya told daijiworld.
Specially-abled Athlete P Somashekar's Award Withdrawn
In a shocking development, the government has withdrawn the Ekalavya Award for P Somashekar for submitting fake documents.
Government sources told daijiworld that Somshekhar had submitted in his application that he had won two golds in international athletics meet for thr specialy-abled. After verifying the documents, the authority concerned found that the documents were forged.
The sports department of Karntaka state also ordered an enquiry into the forged document case.
Roshan Ferrao's Eklavya Award Withheld
Meanwhile, the state government has put on hold the Eklavya Award for Mangalore bodybuilder Roshan Ferrao, as the sports department of the state wants to re-verify certain documents.
Along with Ferrao, the government has withheld the Eklavya award for S Naveen (karate) also. But sources said that they will get the green signal after re-verification of documents.
