Bangalore: Led by Archibishop, Team Including Mangalore Bishop to Visit Rome

Bangalore, Aug 29: A 9-member team of Bishops of Karnataka, including Mangalore Bishop Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza, led by Bangalore Archbishop Most Rev Dr Bernard Moras, who is also the President of Karnataka Region Catholic Bishops’ Council (KRCBC), will be leaving for Rome to meet Pope Benedict XVI on the official 'Ad Limina’ visit from September 1 to 10.

'Ad Limina’ is a technical term implying an obligation on the part of all the members of Catholic Church hierarchy to visit ''thresholds of the Apostles” Saints Peter and Paul and present themselves before the Pope, the Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church, to give an account of their respective Dioceses.

The object of the visit is not merely to make a pilgrimage to the tombs of the Apostles, but, above all, to show the proper reverence for the successor of St Peter, to acknowledge practically his universal jurisdiction by giving an account of the condition of particular churches, to receive his admonitions and counsels, and thus bind more closely the members of the Church to its Divinely appointed head.

The Bishops of the Karnataka Metropolitan Province, who will be part of the team led by the Archbishop of Bangalore, comprises: Most Rev T Anthony Swamy (Bishop of Chikmagalur), Most Rev Thomas Vazhapilly (Bishop of Mysore), Most Rev Henry D’Souza (Bishop of Bellary), Most Rev Derek Fernandes (Bishop of Karwar), Most Rev Aloysius Paul D’Souza (Bishop of Mangalore), Most Rev Peter Machado (Bishop of Belgaum), Most Rev Gerald Isaac Lobo (Bishop of Shimoga) and Most Rev Robert Michael Miranda (Bishop of Gulbarga).

During the Ad Limina visit, all the Bishops of Karnataka, will convey to the Holy Father their filial love, respect and obedience, and request him to impart his apostolic blessings upon all of them and the in people Karnataka.

At the same time all Bishop’s pray for Karnataka at the tombs of Saints Peter and Paul and at the other Basilicas in Rome.

I do not think there is anything wrong in making a pilgrmage to Rome, the eternal city and bedrock of Catholicism. Would you like to say the same if leaders of other religions go to their places of worship. However I would like to take note your point,if they travel is the most inexpensive class (economy class, and not in Emirates Airlines) then trip is justified,if in business/first class then I would definitly question like you.

Congratulations and best wishes to all the Bishops on their religious visit to Rome. May their visit bring in more peace and love to all. Mangalore Diocese is too big. It is humanly impossible to shoulder the responsility by one bishop. In fact during the day of Bishop Basil DSouza, seat was created for additional Bishop was created and Bishop Aloysius DSouza was appointed. The untimely demise of Bishop Basil DSouza, His vision remained on paper. May I appeal to all the Bishops of Karnataka to impress upon the Pope to appoint a Bishop for Udupi and hepl flock to get good care -spirituality or otherwise.

A 9-member team of Bishops of Karnataka will fly out to Rome to meet Pope Benedict XVI on the official 'Ad Limina’ visit from September 1 to 10.

The flight tickets will be expensive.

It would have been much better to use the money for the expensive flight to spend on street children to give them food, shelter, medical health care, gifts and building an orphanage.

I do not want to criticise the trip to Rome but the misery and poverty of street children for example in Kolkata and other cities is terrible.

And the money should have been used to help them

    Best regards

Archbishops and Bishops of Karnataka going to Rome is a wonderful occasion to renew the local religious fervour. These Bishops have suffered a lot during the persecution in Karnataka by communal forces. In spite of their great service they require time to time visit Rome as we Hindus go to Haridwar, Puri and other holiest places. Wish you Archbishops and Bishops a great spiritual renewal. We are grateful to you for providing quality education to our children and society. Thanks. Doddanna Damaskatte.
