Beltangady: SMS 'Loot'tery - Youth Royally Conned, Loses Rs 3.85 Lac

Beltangady: SMS 'Loot'tery - Youth Royally Conned, Loses Rs 3.85 Lac

Daijiworld Media Network – Beltangady (VA)

Beltangady, Sep 4: Despite constant warnings from the media, a youth here has fallen prey to ‘SMS Scam’ by blindly believing that his mobile phone had won a bumper prize of 50 lac and in turn lost Rs 3.85 lac of his own.

Just like the messages which most of us have already received stating – ‘Congratulations. Your mobile number has won 5 Lac dollars' asking to forward  names, addresses, and photographs to an email id specified in the SMS, Nagesh Hegde (20) too received the same. Easily impressed and in fact fooled by the message Nagesh responded immediately hoping to get the huge amount of cash.

Nagesh had got a reply for his SMS that as per the rules of Indian Government he needs to pay the tax to avail his gift money. The SMS was in Coco Cola Company’s name. When Nagesh called the number provided in the SMS a fellow named John Smith answered his call and as per his instructions Nagesh went to State Bank, Beltangady branch and deposited Rs 3.85 lac to an account.

Last time when Nagesh had called up the same number to ask when he will get his cash prize, he was told that he needs to pay another 1 lac to get the amount. Already he had taken a loan with his own home’s guarantee and also had borrowed money from several people.

Being a painter it was hard for him to gather another 1 lac. When he spoke about the offer to his friends he was shocked to learn that he had been conned by the fraudsters and whatever messages he had got were all fake.  Helpless Nagesh finally filed a complaint at Beltangady police station.

Thousands of people, who had followed the lead provided by such messages, have lost money and mental peace in the bargain. People should never give in to the lure offered by such messages, although the names of the senders may appear to be reputed companies like ICC Cricket, Cocacola, Pespi and so on.

Majority of these scamsters are of Nigerian origin. Most of them are denied accounts in Indian banks due to their bad image. What they do is befriend some unwary person and convince him to use his account for these shady transactions with a promise of a good % from each deposit. Greedily many agree as it appears perfectly fine for them. These innocent account holders come to know very late as to what business these cheaters do when the police reach their doors, but the perpetrators escape with the booty! Nagesh fell into the greed trap. At least he should have taken somebody into confidence before sending such a large amount!!

Most of the SMS or messages from UK,BBC or Pepsi cola ect..ect..lottery that 100% scam. Be careful. If you haven't purchased a lottery ticket on the site through then it's most probably a scam. You don't get any thing for nothing. It's a scam do not answer or don't send money for tax or fees purpose. Also do not give your personal information and bank accounts details. sms or messages from your mobils phone and that will be the end of that.

Despite so much of publicity and awareness being spread by the media several times over in DK, how could he get duped? Hope he is not a middle class of poor guy who will never ever be able to write this big loss off!!

People should know there is nothing like easy money unless you cheat some one and rob.

We cant have the eat the cake and have it too.

It was a VPP parcel phenomenon and quick money 4 decades back, when a well read newspaper advertised 'how to get rid of bed bugs'. My friend ordered the "bedbug system" to be VPP parcel, who was sent a parcel from Delhi for payment of Rs 10 to the postal delivery.
He promptly paid Rs 10 for the VPP, only to find two wooden blocks, with an instruction to place the bug on one wooden block and hit with the other.
Surely it would work doesnt it?

After all everyone cannot be rich. One should watch movie "Bruce the almighty". Because it is some ones loss is another ones gain, a state of balancing.

When police, bureaucrats, and politicians of all parties get rich overnight and get away with it with out any fear of law, the public too wish to dream big and get rich the easy way, fully not knowing that there is no short cut to success in any field, unless you break the law (which is a crime all over the world, but a way of life in India....)

Before asking question all the public should aware that what they are doing in spite of waring/alert from police?.How many frauds are happening now a days.Anybody is aware? Knowing all these Still public blindly tempted/keen to go for those silly things without testing the authenticity of such SMS believing that they can become rich overnight.Of course you are asking the question what step police have taken? They might have slept yet to get up from the slumber. No doubt they may be knowing these fraudsters, they are capable of handling the situation very well. But without public co-operation handling the situation is herculean task.Besides police may be having hand in gloves with fraudsters, who knows?.50%-50% share. These can be busted/tackled only when public extend their co-operation and are alert.

Manoj, also police, if the want, can trace the person through the bank a/c details to which the victim has deposited the money. They will not do that if they already got a small portion of this scam money. I think students while in school & colleges, should be informed about such scams to prevent them becoming future victims. Bcse, though we all know about such scams, the youngsters (here see he is 20 yrs) may not have often aware of these. When I first recd such mail I was actually unaware of such scam. Luckily, I disclosed to one of my friends who informed me about the scam.
