Mangaluru, Dec 16: Jayashreekrishna Parisara Premi organization has urged to name Mangaluru International Airport after former union minister late George Fernandes.

The founder of the Samithi Thonse Jayashreekrishna Shetty speaking during the news conference at Udupi said that George Fernandes was instrumental for the development of Tulunadu and was the focus of the state and entire country's politics. "It has been our long-time demand to give his name for Mangaluru international airport."

“He had provided Konkan railways, a boon between Mangaluru to Mumbai train travel, enabled the conversion of Mangaluru to Bengaluru train route tracks to broad gauge, night landing facilities at Mangaluru international airport by upgrading the airport. His farsightedness and dedication in implementing several projects including the Sea bird project of Karwar have no equal. He has made projects that were not possible for any other politician. The two names that were suggested recently in the Vidhan Sabha are a part of our culture and history. As there are no memorials in the name of George Fernandes anywhere in our country, we should give his name at least to our airport and repay his debt. I have already visited and requested union minister Rajnath Singh, home minister Amit Shah and chief minister Siddaramaiah in this connection. They have responded positively to my request. However, the MLAs and MPs in our district should take the initiative about it,” he said.

Committee district chief secretary Arun Prkash Shetty and district secretary Surendra Mendon were present.
