Mangalore, Sep 10:
The annual 'Leadership Award’ in education and communication for the year 2010-2011 instituted by the International Orientation Center and International Institute for Public Policy (under the sponsorship of Max and Jessie Rasquinha, USA) was conferred on Vinay Hegde, Chancellor, Nitte University, and Monsignor Fr Fred Pereira (posthumous award), former vicar general of Mangalore Diocese here on Saturday September 10.

The awards were presented at a banquet reception ceremony held at the AIMIT campus of St Aloysius College, Beeri, Kotekar.

Accepting the honour, Vinay Hegde said that education is a never ending quest for knowledge and one should look at mentors to take the right steps in life. “Obtaining knowledge also paves the way for responsibility of sharing it among others,” he added.

The family of Fr Pereira received his award. Max E Rasquinha made the opening remarks. Anita Cordiero invoked God’s blessings. Savitha Shenoy sung ‘Vande Mataram’ while Fr Denzil Lobo sung ‘I Have a Dream’ in his lovely voice much to the applause of the audience.

Urmila Shetty, divisional governor, spoke on “What’s Leadership?” Fr Valerian D’Souza narrated the life of late Fr Pereira. Bharathi Shevgoor, area governor, spoke on “Whats Communication?” and said that modern technical developments have adversely affected the actual quintessence of communication. Joe Gonsalves narrated the life of Vinay Hegde.

On the occasion, a scholarship award of Rs 25,000 each was awarded to two candidates—Rajesh Martin Pais of St Joseph’s Engineering College, and Mehanaze of NMAM Institute of Technology, Nitte.

A classical dance programme was held on the occasion. Later, a renowned school band of the city led the procession to the banquet hall where various entertainment programmes were held. Leslie Rego compered the programme.

It was a wonderful function. I am really happy that Mr Vinaya Hegde was honoured for his leadership in the field of education and business. I am also happy that late Msgr Freddie Pereira’s contribution to the society has been recognized and has been awarded posthumously. Thanks to Mr Max and Jessie Rasquinha for organizing this wonderful programme. Mr Max Rasquinha has been an inspiration to all of us. We admire his dedication to the cause of promoting our youth to be future leaders. He has beautified the AIMIT campus of St Aloysius College with priceless paintings, artifacts, and every wall speaks volumes off his contribution to make this place beautiful. I am very much indebted to him and wish him all the best. We wanted to honour him with the Distinguished Aloysian Alumni Award this year. But he has deferred it to a later date. Thanks Max. God bless.

I am happy to comment that the decision to confer awards on Mr. Vinay Hegde and Monsignor Fred Pereira is indeed commendable. Both these stalwarts have contributed considerably for the betterment of people all over. They have had common goals viz EDUCATION even though Mr. Hegde is a great Industrialist apart being an Educationalist

Mr. Vinay Hegde has a long history of success. He is a born entrepreneur with great ambition and ideas and indeed he has been a success in every area he has put his hands to. I have no hesitation in saying that he has imbibed great qualities of heart and mind from his father late Mr.K.S. Hedge - senior Judge of the Supreme Court turned a politician and that apart his mother was greatly responsible to bring the best of Mr. Vinay Hegde. He has the admiration of the elite and the poor alike. He has been an inspiration

Monsignor Fred on the other hand devoted his time and attention to improve the lot of people more particularly in the remote town of Madyanthar which he turned into leading township with schools and colleges. He was also greatly responsible to promote and help St. Joseph's Engineering College in Vamanzoor and that apart was the founder of The Scholarship Trust for seminarians.

While on the subject it is expedient that we compliment Max Rasquinha and his wife Jessy who instituted the IIPP leadership awards.

It is indeed fitting to recognize the good work and greatness in a person even after his death. Fr.Fred Periera was a very worthy and eminent personality in all aspects of his vocation and a man of deep human values unseen today.

Heartiest Congratulations to Max and Jessie for instituting IIPP Leadership Awards!

It is rather touching to note that though Max and Jessie have been in the U.S. for almost five decades, their love for Mangalore is proverbial as has been manifested in their support for local leadership through the Toastmasters and Gavel Clubs and the well organised programmes during their visits to Mangalore. Besides they have also been magnanimous to the educational institutions.

May the Almighty shower choicest blessings on all your future ventures.
