Mangaluru, Jan 14: A distressing incident occurred on January 13 in a private petro chemical company in the Bykampady area, resulting in the tragic demise of a worker named Ronald Paul.

While engaged in welding work on an empty oil tank along with six other workers, Ronald Paul was stationed on top of the tank. Simultaneously, the other workers were operating at the floor level.

At approximately 4 PM, a fire erupted at the site, causing burn injuries to Ronald Paul and minor injuries to the other workers. During the incident, Ronald Paul fell approximately 20 feet from the top of the tank, sustaining severe injuries to his stomach and head.

Ronald Paul, along with the other injured workers, was promptly transported to AJ Hospital for medical attention. Unfortunately, despite undergoing treatment, Ronald Paul succumbed to his injuries on the night of January 13, 2024, around 8:30 PM.

A case has been registered under section 304A and 337 of the IPC in Crime No 03/2024 at Panamboor PS against the owner of the company, and investigations have commenced into the matter.

RIP! Welder climbed on twenty feet tank without any harness or some railing to hold is a very very risky venture; also conducting welding work on uncleant chemical tanks are fraught with high risks of explosions, which the owner of the workshop should have been wary about! This person should be made to pay heavy compensation to the victims which will be some consolidation to the bereaved families!

It is notably seen in the industrial at Baikampady that majority of the industries are lacking in taking safety precautions. Under the act of SOLAS, these companies cannot be a competent organization to supply any materials if the safety measures are compromised, but yet they get orders thru' sources or by 3rd party job work. I myself having worked for sometime in M'lore have seen such lack of safety at NMPT port as well. Stevedores are climbing the containers laden ship bare feet or with Hawaii chappals and there is absolutely no one taking them to task. Even the drivers when they enter the port too are lacking with minimum PPE

Private companies normally adopt a care-a-damn-attitude when it comes to safety and compromise with the safety of their staff. The reasons may be many to cut down on unnecessary expenditure. Unfortunately the name of the company is withheld for some good/bad reason to cover up their malpractices which is clearly evident. There are hundreds of similar instances like Ronald Paul in our country which go unreported due to greasing of palms between company officials and environmental and safety authorities. RIP Ronald Paul.

Joseph, Bombay You are right . None of the companies in India have any safety precautions . Nor work permit system Workers are not giving trainings nor explained the danger when they will face while working on hazardous things like elctrical, Welding ,Radio active etc. No safety officer nor the people listen to safety officer . Officer are corrupted . Cheap laborer's are brought no are unware of any safety Or their family can fight when like this death occurs . Company has highly paid lawyer & judges rare bribed . At the the end same repeats in the company & innocents life are gone . Owners are happy with their profits . RIP Paul.
