Mangalore: City to Airport Volvo Bus Service Terminated

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Sep 18: A couple of months after it was introduced with many promises and hopes, KSRTC's ambitious Volvo bus service between the city and the airport has met a sad end.

The air-conditioned service was introduced on July 15 and there were even plans to extend it based on demand, but far from that, the service itself has been discontinued due to several issues, with immediate effect.

Only two buses were introduced, one of them a month after its launch, and scheduling them according to the departures and arrivals at the airport was not easy. Moreover, the buses were only during the daytime, which meant that passengers on flights arriving/taking off at night had to go without this service.

The taxi association too was up in arms with the service operators, and had complained that the new service would be a kick in their stomachs. As ferrying passengers to and fro the city was their only source of income, they had protested vehemently against the service. In addition, at the airport too there were constant encounters between Volvo operators and the taximen.

The service has also been discontinued basically due to lack of takers. Of late, the buses have seen only a handful of passengers hiring their services. And this, despite the fact that rates were reduced and terminal point introduced at the railway station.

Naturally, the service has come under loss and the authorities see no point in continuing it.

this is one nasty play between taxi association and KSRTC authorities.the taxy fair is too much hire than flight charge. If the authorities give wide publicity the service will be economical and popular. This will happening any where. There is no value for money of public?????

It is desirable to shift the Bajpe Bus Stand near the airport.  Altenatively, to construct a city busline with stops inside the compound of the airport on the lines of Mumbai airport so that common man travel comfortably to his destinations. It is not always true that only high profile people travel on air.

With the LTC facilities common man also uses the airservices He cannot afford to spend on monopolised taxi service from Bajpe . Atlest there should be sharing taxi services to benefit common man.

Most of the International passengers traveling to Mangalore are from Gulf Countries, The workers who spend year and more, away from their family members, when they return to their land they eagerly want to meet their families, and from Airport they will try to reach home ASAP at any cost, Hence there is no question of waiting for Volvo or Tata, they don’t want to waste a single minute at Airport???

When the Daijiworld reported that Volvo bus service was about to be introduced, I commented stating that “Gondola” service overhead from the table top air terminal to Kavoor Hill top would be better fit than the Volvo bus line. The shortest distance between the airport to Mangalore city is via gondola not via winding creepy marvoor road line. Besides this gondola line would have added tourist attraction. Now the bus service commenced and terminated. The entire service sector to and from the airport is ill-conceived, ill-designed, and ill-organized.. Direct private buses from (1) Mangalore to the terminal, (2) Surathkal to the Terminal and (3) Udupi to the Terminal via Kinnigoli and Bajpe should be the instituted and (5) entry tickets to enter into the terminal should be abolished to attract tourist, and finally (6) more air traffic from other international destinations in middle east with direct non-stop flights by other than Air India Express should be initiated (Air India is being removed from the Stay Alliance for service related issues). This change in culture would promote IXE truly an airport worthy of travelling abroad.

Looks like the bulk of the people interested in riding the Volvo bus are outside Mangalore and are yet to go on vacation and thus avail its services.

If the report is to be believed then "Of late, the buses have seen only a handful of passengers hiring their services. And this, despite the fact that rates were reduced and terminal point introduced at the railway station." People vote with their wallets (or maybe purses). Is the so-called taxi-mafia preventing eager passengers from getting aboard the bus? Maybe there really isn't a conspiracy around every corner.

If there is a viable demand for such a service, maybe a private concern could charter buses at the appropriate times. For that matter, maybe the airlines operating in Mangalore could offer such an extended (paid) service to their passengers to take them into the city. If the airlines charter buses, they they needn't purchase them and so avoid that cost. And they only need worry about making the buses available appropriate to their own arrivals and departures. That solves the scheduling issue. Of course, that leaves the question of demand - are there really enough people interested in such a service to keep it running long-term? Or is it just wishful thinking on the part of Daiji readers?

As for the supposed taxi-wallah mob, maybe a bunch of them could get together and run such buses. Then they have a vested interested in the success of the scheme. After all, a bus is just a very big taxi!!!

Sad end of a very good service but someone rightly said we have to change our mindset to use this kind of service with high benifits in less cost. I hope atleast RTA will allow private operators so they will convert this route into a profitable one.

No one has a right to bread and butter. when taxis were introduced, did anyone cry that this would prevent rickshaw-wallahs from earning bread and butter? when airplanes first flew, who shed tears for the bus drivers and train operators? the established fact is that competition is good. instead the taxi-wallahs have a monopoly and can do as they please. no one's hi-fi will be safe when any racket is operating!

He should be blamed fully for the worst ever unworthy roads!! if he represents Mangalore at Delhi...he lacks courage to change the road condition....and I mean it!! I hardly remember him addressing road conditions!! To and from airport!! Seroiously I feel due to lack of education!! Along with agenda of votes you need to learn resolving problem!! He will still get elected due to agenda!! At the end...there is only agenda and common man has to give way and stand at bay with unworthy roads...!!!

Sad end to a really good initiative !This is only because of the strong Taxi drivers association and also the private bus lobby .Lets see how does the govt.justify withdrawing this service . And even if these buses werent running overpacked, how much loss would KSRTC make by running this service .

    What a shame!

Prakash , mangalore it was done with proper planning only, but the problem is with our people. Also you are talking about spending rs.75/-. The people who are spending thousands of rupees on journey from gulf to mlore will think to spend additional 75 rupees?? Also i agree that MP should look into the people's neccesity first, but last time i have seen one of the commentator commenting that the volvo bus wont go till his door steps and he has to walk for sometime or hire auto from the bus stop. So tell me what to do with such people? Should our MP think of starting volvo buses to the doorsteps of the people??

Here the commentators like Ismail perinje are waiting to blame state govt each and everything, but i dont understand what's there to blame BJP state govt in this matter when the people of our city dont want to use such volvo buses. When there are hardly a few people travelling in volvo the govt definately have to think of cancelling volvo buses from airport to city, whereas as Mr Sandesh Shetty quoted in his comment the same type of volvo bus service from bangalore airport to blore city is running smoothly without any problem.

ASandesh Shetty Bangalore/Kudla.I knew this is gonna happen no one wants to spend 75 to 10 rs just to travel from Airport to Mangalore,so insted to planning these stupid ideas, why they can't plan to fix the same road, atleast people can drive safely without having any accidents and trafic problems. When you are MP of the district you need to find out what actually people of mangalore need and try to fulfil their needs, thats why they elect you as their leader. No one asked for Volvo bus and common man can not effort to travel in this bus.thats why i mentioned Nalin kumar name. There are lot of things that need to be done for the easy living for a common man that need to be focused first, then go for this.

I had warned earlier that flight passengers are not ordinary city commuters. They need extra-ordinary facilities at the boarding place like an AC lounge similar to the airport lounge with Wi-Fi flight announcement connectivity, toilets facilities, Beverage cafe, Gift/Book/Confectionary stall, LCD TVs etc. Only those who hold the KSRTC Volvo Bus ticket are allowed entry inside this lounge. The location of such lounges should be one at the Mangalore Central Railway Station and another near Bejai Bus Stand for rail/road commuting flight passengers as well as for the passengers in and around Mangalore. Let the Railway, KSRTC, Airport, MUDA and MCC authority extend their contribution to make this a reality. Good luck.

Edward - Mangalore Very sensible comments. One should be practical, personally if I do not have any luggage and the timmings of the Volvo are convenient - I'd take the Volvo - rather than pay the rs. 450/- and still argue with the cabby. It is OK for people with easy money to show off - and then say "I used an AC Cab" - as if they were born in Switzerland and cannot bear the 20 minute drive to their own house - where they may not even have a ceiling fan !!

I have booked my air ticket to my hometown in mid-October at a concessional rate. Being a senior citizen, I was looking forward to travel by this bus to the city. However, I am saddened to learn that the bus service has been terminated forthwith.

Looks like the taxi/private cars lobby has prevailed with their protests of losing business due to the bus service.

Here in Mumbai, the bus service has been running for several years and many city commuters have been benefiting from the same and avoid getting fleeced by the taxi and private car operators.

I would request the Government not succumb to the taxi/private car lobby protests and you should be more concerned about the common man like me.

If you don't resume the service woe be to you the Volvo bus authorities. I have a feeling that you guys may have been bribed by these wily taxi/private car operators. I hope Anna Hazare steps in to stop this rot of corruption menace. Bharat mata ki jai!

Excellent Move by the Taxi Association.. Personally I feel its good cos it was pointless by the govt introducing such services to the city from the airport as it would steal the bread and butter of all taxi drivers... And people who are going a long distance from the airport you always have option may be u can jump on a taxi from the airport to city and then jump on a bus all the way to your destination..

By that means the taxi drivers are happy that their earnings are in place plus we as the customers...I am not jealous about the Govt moves whether they introduce or no but For a country like India where in people struggle to earn their daily bread this was not the best option... Like wealthy people who can afford please use a taxi all the way through dont be stingy and people who cant afford jus ask the taxi to u at a bus stop and from there work your way out -)

The old terminal at Bajpe was served by local city buses, 21 & 47. So why can't the RTA authorities grant permits for the extension of same routes to the New Airport Terminal? I believe it will be beneficial to both air passengers as well as affordable to local residents.

In the Airport there should be 2 exit/entry points. One for those who use buses and one for those who use taxis & pvt cars. So that the air passengers using bus need not struggle to carry their luggage before boarding into and after getting down from the bus at the airport. This convinience if provided, will increase the number of people using the bus. This also avoids bus drivers from confronting the taxi drivers. Any how now it is discontinued means what is the point?

Like major European cities Mangalore Airport/Airlines companies in collabration with KSRTC could have tried early check in in city offices where you could the baggages prior to flight instead of taking taxis to airport. Once your check in luggage is ed at the city centers they could have taken thsi in the boot space of the bus, & its easy for people to travel with just hand baggages comfortabley without using taxi's. This buses could have reached Airport 2 hrs before each Intl flight & 1 hr before each Domestic flights. I guess this option would have worked better.
