Udupi: SMS Lottery Fraud: In Hopes of Making Crores, Man Loses Lacs

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Sep 27: In yet another case of SMS fraud, in a much bigger scale this time, a resident of Malpe lost Rs 16,92,000, while trying to get hold of a multi-crore rupees raffle prize amount, announced through a message received on his mobile phone.

Prakash could have lost more, had he doggedly followed the baits laid out by the fraudsters. In a complaint filed at Malpe police station, he revealed that he had lost all the savings and assets earned by working abroad, after being enticed by the desire to make big bucks. Prakash is one among thousands who have become victims of the rackets run by cheats who scout internet and mobile phones for gullible victims.

On July 4, Prakash received a message announcing a bumper prize of GBP 7,00,000 (around Rs 5.4 crore) in Irish Raffle lucky draw. Three persons, identified as Mike John, Peter Goodluck, and Dr Stag Mourice, collected detailed information from him over the following days, and started instructing him to remit various amounts to different bank accounts like fee towards foreign exchange, terrorist fund contribution, etc. After remitting money through different banks, he tried to contact the concerned through emails and phone calls, but in vain.

In another message purported to have been sent by Peter Goodluck of Mike John Group, he remitted Rs 37,000 to an account in the name of Inderjeet Lalwani, through ICICI Bank, Udupi. A subsequent email instructed him to deposit Rs 65 lac towards income tax. Prakash, who had lost Rs 16,92,000 by then, realizing that he had got caught in a web laid out by fraudsters, approached the police.

Police have begun investigations. It may be recalled that Dr Krishna from here had lost about Rs 40 lac in this way in the year 2009. Many people, feeling embarrassed at admitting their blunder, do not register any official complaint. The policemen have requested the people to be vigilant against rackets being run by money swindlers like the above.

No Law and Order, most of this kinds of messages come from Nigeria, and other part of Africa, UK..etc

Similarly there many Credit card/Debit Card/ATM Card fraud takes place every single seconds. NEVER GIVE OUT YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION thro' ONLINE or TELEPHONE.

There is no dearth of educated fools in our country. They think they are very smart and will pocket the prize without consulting any well informed friend or relative lest he ask a cut from the money, such is the greed quotient. I am reminded of a similar incident wherein one of our relative's son received an appointment letter of a fictitious oil co. based in UK saying that they had found his CV on the net and they were very much interested in his services with offers of astronomical salary, club class airfare, and out of the world facilities. His entire family was so overwhelmed that they became manic and their attitude towards others changed overnight, and the news started spreading around. The moment I came to know, I immediately told them this is an outright trap and to be careful and not part with any money. However, they made their independent inquiry and came to know it to be fake and were saved just in time. In days their joy was over, but they were filled with another happiness and peace of mind, that of not getting cheated. This is the way it is!!

These types of fraud messages are very common and lot of people get them. Thousands of emails/smses are sent out daily basically by Nigerias. They use fake emails, names, route the calls through various networks etc. and if one person falls for it, they make millions. But we should not be foolish enough to get subdued by them!

When I first received a similar email stating that I had won Rs 9 crores, I was thrilled and my heart pounded! I thought I was the most lucky person on this planet. But I was lucky enough to have the email id googled and learn about these fraudulent messages.

Anyways for Prakash I can only say a famous kannada proverb
    "ಮಿಂಚಿ ಹೋದ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಚಿಂತಿಸಿ ಫಲವಿಲ್ಲ"
You will not be able to get your money back but we can only say 'sorry for your loss'

And all you daiji readers, do lot of research (online, friends, etc) on these fraud messages, only then you can beware of such a heinous crime. Don't fall for these stupid frauds

One thing is very clear guys, easy money is just a myth. You need to sweat to earn money

A big thanks to Daijiworld for creating an awareness on this.

That address doesn't exist in the UK. Just have the address googled and you 'll know what you are looking for.

Recently I also became a victim of this sort of “ Quick Rich” scheme here in UAE. I was asked by one of my very well know persons to join him to the seminar by hiding the real fact. Knowing nothing about this, with trust, I blindly went along with him to the hotel to participate in the seminar. Upon reaching the venue the known person changed the statement and said that this is a kind of seminar which provides a detailed information about the business opportunities that available right now in the market .The another person( agent) who was just waiting for me at that point started to narrate & present the things in such a brilliant way that I completely lost my sense & provide my credit card details just to sign in as a member of this Multi Level Marketing( MLM) scheme. By the time I got the congratulation mail in my in box I had already lost(Investment in his term) considerable amount of my savings. I didn’t share this incident with any one even with my family members by thinking that in return they wouldn’t hesitate to call me as fool in any case if I suppose admit it.

I don’t know if I going to recover this amount in any means. Whenever I ask about this to the agent (including the Known person who took me to the seminar) he gives quite good answer-Bring 2 members to your left & right.

Could someone please show me a way to come out from this distress. Is there any hopes of recovering this amount.

I am sure the caller might have collapsed after listening to such abuses. I advise the readers to follow the same. You have every right to behave in this manner as these hoax callers do not deserve any better treatment. This will help in a way to reduce such hoax calls.

I remember one of our family friend received mail about winning lottery, it was like 10 – 15 years back, than they started to target through email, and now they are sending SMS to mobile. Even i have received email and such kind of SMS.
What can be done is, if more and more people complain it to police, it can be definitely be traced, and awareness is required in these case when the people like Prakesh & Dr. Krishna are fooled.

    Hello All,
I have got several text messages similiar to the one's above.
Please such messages immediatley do not even bother to read it fully. Simply remember one thing there is nothing called a free lunch in this world. My Dad has not given me a single penny with out asking or begging for it and who are these guys who are so generous.
For your further infromation: There are also people calling up and potraing themselves as software engineers from Mirco Soft. They will say that they have seen some problems in your computer which is why it has reduced speed. They will only ask you a couple of details like IP address. They will guide you every step as what to do and what to check. The minute they get the required info they can operate you computer remotely and will down load all info including your inter net banking etc and will clean up all your accounts.
So please be aware and do not fall prey to such fraudsters.

My husband was smart enough he told them that he doesn't trust them unless they deposit the same in his account and then we will do the needful. Sometimes we should act smart and talk to friends/ family members regarding these things and react accordingly.

There are mainly two types of people who are most likely to fall victim to these fraudsters. There are those who are simply 'Greedy' and there are the ones who are 'Desperate' due to financial needs either to pay for a relative's operation/medical treatment or to pay for a daughter's or sister's marriage or to have a home or to pay an agent's charges to go abroad for a job etc. etc.
Fraudsters are well aware of this and exploit these two weaknesses to make people fall into their trap. Stay alert always and use common sense !

How can the educated people fall prey to the targets of these fraudsters.
The victims are usually the gullible who fall for the “quick rich” schemes.
People should understand that there are no “free meals”, and only your hard work and efforts are rewarded.
In the greed to earn more you lose the little that you have.
These quick win schemes to make you rich usually lead to a dead end.
And the fraudsters go in search of their next victims..
