Patna erupts in protests over murder of two children, vehicles torched

Patna, Aug 25: Tensions flared in Bihar’s capital for the third straight day as public outrage over the horrific murder of two children in Patel Nagar escalated into violent street clashes on Monday. The situation turned volatile along the Atal Path stretch, where furious residents set multiple vehicles on fire in protest.

The unrest, which had been simmering for days, boiled over when demonstrators torched a Scorpio SUV and two motorcycles, reducing them to charred remains before fire brigade teams could reach the scene.

With the city teetering on the edge, Patna SSP Kartikeya Sharma and Central SP Diksha rushed to the location to take control of the escalating crisis. SP Diksha was seen personally leading efforts to pacify the crowd and restore order.

The protestors’ anger is rooted in the police’s inaction over the double murder of two siblings — Laxmi Kumari (7) and Dipak Kumar (5) — whose bodies were found inside a parked car on August 15 in the Gokul Path area of Patel Nagar. The car was located within a residential compound under the Patliputra police station jurisdiction.

The children, dressed in school uniforms, had just returned from tuition. Their deaths have shocked the community, and suspicion has fallen on their tuition teacher, who remains a key suspect. However, no arrests have been made, further fueling the public's outrage.

Residents accuse the police of dragging their feet in the investigation despite repeated pleas for justice. As a result, what began as peaceful demonstrations has now transformed into a law and order crisis, with serious questions being raised over the administration’s handling of the case.

The protests have effectively paralyzed parts of the city, and with tensions still high, authorities remain on alert to prevent further flare-ups.
