Mangaluru, Mar 5: Karnataka State Commission for Women (KSCW) chairperson Dr Nagalakshmi Chaudhary visited a private hospital in Mangaluru, where three students have been admitted after being splashed with acid at Kadaba on March 4. She also informed that an immediate compensation of Rs 4 lac per child will be released.
Speaking to the media, Dr Chaudhary stated, "I have met with the doctors and parents of the three children. The children are understandably worried about the exams they have missed and have raised concerns about whether they will need to rewrite them. I will be in discussion with the minister of primary and secondary education to facilitate the possibility of the children rewriting their exams."
"The doctors are currently providing treatment, and the severity of the wounds caused by the acid will determine the course of action. The treatment is progressing well. In the next two weeks, depending on the extent of the injuries, two of the students may require plastic surgery. As the healing progresses, the necessity of plastic surgery will become clearer.
“Fortunately, the acid was contained in a plastic bottle, resulting in a lower concentration of acid, which likely mitigated the severity of the injuries sustained by the children. One child has suffered injuries covering approximately 20% of their body, another has injuries ranging from 10-12%, and the third child has less than 10% injuries,” she said.
"An immediate compensation of Rs 4 lac per child will be released, and additional compensation of up to Rs 20 lac will be provided for corrective surgery, depending on the treatment requirements," said Dr Chaudhary.
Dr Chaudhary also added, "I believe it is essential for schools and universities to play a proactive role in motivating and raising awareness, which is greatly needed. Counselling for boys is imperative to help them comprehend the severity of punishment and the consequences of their actions. I will engage with the relevant department to initiate widespread awareness campaigns on issues such as blackmailing, cybercrimes, and more."
She further commended the students for their quick thinking in apprehending the accused, who is just 23 years old.
