Mangaluru, Mar 21: In the outskirts of the city, in Adyar, locals face difficulty commuting due to an un-gated railway crossing, posing serious security risks.
The road leading to Adyar hills features an un-gated railway track. Despite the presence of a railway officer, who has been appointed, there are no proper facilities such as a roof or room, leaving commuters exposed to the elements. Locals express concern over the lack of progress in installing gates at these crossings to prevent future accidents. Without gates, there is a risk of vehicles getting stuck on the tracks, and the unpredictable timing of train arrivals poses a danger of serious injuries or fatalities.
Mahabala Adyar, a local resident, highlighted the longstanding issue, stating, "In 1985, the project was sanctioned and a committee was formed under the leadership of Ram Chandra. However, no progress has been made since then. The main concern arises at night, as this road serves as a shortcut for Karkala, Adyarpadav, Neermarga, posing risks to unaware travellers. Despite assurances from various MPs and MLAs over the years, no action has been taken. The DGM of Mysore railways promised a watchman and construction of a proper railway crossing within 15 days, but no work has commenced. Locals demand a watchman during night hours and the construction of a level crossing bridge. The existing watchman lacks basic facilities such as toilets and proper shelter, forcing individuals, including women, to stand under the scorching sun. Residents are frustrated and warn politicians that their votes will be affected if this issue remains unresolved."
He further added, "Years ago, locals sacrificed their land for railway construction, expecting development. However, what was once seen as progress has now become a safety hazard. Local citizens urge authorities to address this critical issue promptly to prevent further loss of life."
