Geneva, Oct 8 (IANS): The UN has allocated $17.6 million in emergency aid to those worst affected by floods in Pakistan, Xinhua reported Friday.
The money will be used to provide assistance in healthcare, safe water, sanitation, food, shelter material, blankets and other life-saving support, said the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
The funding from the UN-led Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) has fallen short of the enormous humanitarian need caused by floods in Pakistan.
The UN had put up a $357-million appeal in September, of which only 16 percent have been funded till date. The CERF allocation is so far the single largest donation to the appeal.
Pakistan's southern Sindh province has been devasted by floods since mid-August caused by incessant rains. Thousands of people have been displaced.
