Beijing, Oct 10 (IANS): Twelve Wal-Mart stores in southwest China have been ordered to close after they were accused of fraudulently selling ordinary pork as organic pork.
The stores run by the US multinational corporation were accused of selling over 63,500 kg of falsely labelled pork over the past two years.
Huang Bo, director of industry and commerce in the Chongqing administration, said these stores earned 730,000 yuan (about $114,500) through these illegal sales during the period.
They were fined about 2.60 million yuan, Huang said, adding Wal-Mart has been punished 21 times since 2006 for selling substandard food, the official Xinhua news agency reported Monday.
