Mangaluru: Youth drowns while picking clams in river

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, May 14: A youth who came with his friends from Bajpe Adyapadi to Sasihithlu Munda beach near Kolachi Kambala beach, under the jurisdiction of Mulky police station, drowned in the river and went missing.

The missing youth, identified as Abhilash (24), a resident of Old Airport Adyapadi Bajpe, had come with nine friends to catch crabs and pick clams at Kolachi Kambala beach. As the water level in the Shambhavi river was low, the group walked two kilometres towards the middle of the river.

When they reached the Sasihithlu Munda beach estuary, Dhanush and Jeevan suddenly started drowning as the water level increased. They did not know how to swim. Abhilash attempted to rescue them but also drowned.

Hearing the screams of the remaining team members, Sadashiva Kotian and other fishermen from Hejmady rushed to the scene and saved Dhanush and Jeevan, but they could not find Abhilash.

Abhilash was unmarried and worked on a contract basis at Mangaluru railway station. As Sunday was a holiday, he had come to collect clams with his friends.

The SDRF team, coast guards of Hejamady, and police from Mulky and Suratkal are currently searching for Abhilash in the river.

almost all the rivers in and around dk and udupi have deep pits underneath due to illegal sand excavation..there is every chance that even a swimmer will not be able to get out of it if stuck as they contain silt..so do not take chances...life is more precious than marwai

Request all readers, not to venture into the waters of Shashihithu beach. Shambhavi river is deceptively extremely dangerous, even swimmers have been swiftly taken away by the strong currents, never to return !!!!
