Beltangady, May 28: Dakshina Kannada SP Ryshyanth C B informed that three accused have been arrested and valuables worth Rs 8.42 lac have been recovered in connection with a case where dacoits entered the home of an arecanut dealer in Miya, Kalmanja village in 2020. They looted cash and golden ornaments worth lakhs of rupees after tying up the residents.
SP Ryshyanth held a press conference at Dharmasthala police station on May 27, stating that the arrested individuals are Riyaz (40) from Kuloor in Mundaje village, his brother Nawaz (38), and Krishna (37) from Bengaluru. The hunt is still on for the other two suspects.
On June 26, 2020, arecanut dealer Achutha Bhat (56) and his family were at home in Miya, Kalmanja village. As the dog started barking around midnight, Achutha opened both front and back doors. Dacoits then entered, tied up the family members, and looted golden ornaments weighing 30 to 35 sovereigns and silverware weighing 1.2 kg, valued at Rs 12.4 lac. A case was filed at Dharmasthala police station.
Beltangady CI Sandesh P G took over the investigation and submitted a report to the court. However, on May 22, 2024, SI of Dharmasthala police station, Anil Kumar, took Riyaz into custody based on a tip-off that he was attempting to sell the stolen gold. Upon interrogation, the involvement in the Kalmanja dacoity came to light, leading to the arrest of three individuals.
Police seized 104 grams of golden ornaments valued at Rs 7.87 lac, 288 grams of silver valued at Rs 30,240, and a bike valued at Rs 25,000. The total value of the recovered goods is Rs 8.42 lac. The accused have been produced in court.
