Bangalore: Jayalalithaa Answers Nearly 600 Questions in Assets Case
Bangalore, Oct 21 (IANS): Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa Friday completed two-days of answering hundreds of questions from a special court judge here in the disproportionate assets case against her. The proceedings will resume Nov 8.
On Friday, she answered over 200 questions asked by special court judge B.M. Mallikarjunaiah, Karnataka Advocate General B.V. Acharya told reporters here.
Around 500 more questions are to be posed to her, he said.
On Thursday Jayalalithaa had answered 379 questions.
The questions are based on the statements made by over 250 witnesses examined in the over a decade-old case, charging her with amassing Rs.66 crores between 1991 and 1996, when also she was Tamil Nadu chief minister.
The judge has indicated that he has a total of over 1,200 questions, for which he needs answers from Jayalalithaa, Acharya said.
She flew back to Chennai after the deposition and will return Nov 8 to complete the proceedings.
Mallikarjunaiah held the special sitting in the city central prison complex in eastern suburb of Parappana Agrahara, in view of the leader's security needs.
The case was filed in Chennai over a decade ago but was transferred to Bangalore by the Supreme Court in 2003 to ensure fair and free trial.
Like Thursday, she landed at the Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd's airport in city centre and drove in a convoy of vehicles to the prison complex.
Jayalalithaa was directed by the Supreme Court to appear in person in the Bangalore court, though she had cited security concerns and her busy schedule as chief minister to seek exemption.
The apex court had rejected her plea to be allowed to give her statement through video conference.
The Parappana Agrahara jail was heavily guarded with around 1,500 Bangalore police personnel assisted by several of their Tamil Nadu counterparts.
