Udupi, Oct 30: For the second time in the month of October, the price of the popular and much-in-demand Jasmine, known as 'Shankarpura Jasmine', has skyrocketed. The last price traded at was Rs 820 per bunch.
Experts in the area, who are involved in Jasmine cultivation and trading opine that the price could well reach a record Rs 1000 in the next few days.
Earlier in the month, the price shot up during Navaratri festival, and now even three days after Deepavali, there are no signs of any backward trend.
Shankarpura Jasmine is popular abroad, but it has never reached this figure before. Though this is good news for cultivators, citizens who long to buy Jasmine during festival time were disappointed, as many could not afford it.
A resident of Shankarpura - Pangla, speaking to Daijiworld expressed happiness over the current price trend, but said that whenever prices go up jasmine supply was also less. "During off-seasons we generate about 10-12 bunches per day, but now it is hardly one or two. The good thing is, though work is less, the revenue is more or less the same as that during off season"
No doubt, with this demand, Shankarpura Jasmine is enhancing its brand value and emerging as one of the prime occupations for cultivators around the district of Udupi. The highest amount of Jasmine is grown around Shankarpura, Pamboor, Shirva, Belman, Mudarangady, Moodubelle, Udayavar, Katapady and surrounding places.
