Kundapur, Aug 17: IMA Kundapura chapter held a protest against the brutal rape and murder of trainee doctor at Kolkata by marching in silence on Saturday.

The march which began from Shastri circle went on till mini Vidhana soudha via parijata circle and new bus stand. An appeal was submitted to AC K Maheshchandra by Dr Nagesh, district president of the association and Pramila Nayak, president of ima kundapur.

Addressing the protesters, Dr Mahima Acharya, secretary of IMA Kundapura, said, “it is a really serious issue that a trainee doctor is murdered in the hospital itself in Kolkata. We condemn this vehemently. Doctors are also human beings. We also have rights. We want safety at the workplace. We request the public and government to give protection to women doctors and nursing girls.”

President Nagesh said, “this incident is a shame to mankind. Everytime we protest when such incidents occur. But the atrocities on doctors and health staff are continuing. Till now the protection given under the Medical Act of 2008 is still not implemented properly. Whole civil society has to condemn such acts. Medical profession should be protected by law. Today we protested peacefully. If our demands are not met, we have to get down to the streets and protest fiercely.”

Kundapur taluk medical officer Dr Premanand, IMA Kundapura office-bearers, secretary of Government Doctors Association Dr Umesh Nayak, Udupi Dental Doctors Association Dr Jagadish Jogi, secretary, Dr Atul, Ayush Doctor Association president Dr Hariprasad Shetty, secretary, Dr Krishna Rao, Medical Representatives Association president Vasant Udupa, nursing and paramedical, Inner Wheel Club president Sarekha Puranik, office-bearers, members, chiefs of various hospitals of Kundapura and staff took part in the protest.
