Udupi: Sri Krishna Math to host traditional competitions on Aug 27

Udupi, Aug 17: On the occasion of Krishna Janmashtami, Paryaya Sri Puttige and Sri Krishna Math will host various traditional competitions at 4 pm in Rajangana on August 27.

Sri Sugunendratheertha Swamiji, speaking at a press meet on August 16, announced prizes for several competitions, including the tiger dance, folk dance, and mythological dance. “The greatest gift to Lord Krishna on Janmashtami would be to inspire at least one person to undertake the Koti Geeta Lekhna Yajna initiation. We have scheduled traditional competitions for August 27 at 4 pm, and for the first time, attractive prizes will be awarded,” Swamiji stated.

He encouraged everyone to actively participate in the events and competitions associated with Sri Krishna Janmashtami.

Nagaraj Acharya, dewan of Puttige Math, detailed the prize structure: “The first prize for the tiger dance competition is Rs 1.15 lac or a TVS Tube Electric Scooter, with second and third prizes of Rs 50,000 and Rs 25,000 in cash, respectively. The folk dance competition will award Rs 25,000 for first place, Rs 15,000 for second, and Rs 10,000 for third. For the mythological dance competition, the prizes are Rs 30,000 for first, Rs 20,000 for second, and Rs 10,000 for third. We will place greater emphasis on traditional dance and attire.”

Participants interested in competing should register at the reception office in Badagu Malige before August 25. Teams seeking to participate are advised to contact Sri Math Kesava Acharya at 9932287917 for rules, conditions, and additional information.

Starting August 22, a range of programmes will commence, including the inauguration of a handicraft exhibition, Laddootsava on August 23, Dolotsava on August 26, and various religious discourses.

Notable political figures such as union minister Nirmala Sitharaman, H D Kumaraswamy, state ministers Ramalinga Reddy and H K Patil, along with MLAs and MPs from both districts, will attend.

Ramesh Bhat announced that the official events will start on August 17, with traditional games featured on Car Street on August 18. Additional religious programmes will be held at Rajangana.

“Vidwan Pasagi Vijayindracharya, Dr Prajna Marpalli, Chakravarty Sulibele, Dr H S Prema, S N Sethuram, and Dr S L Bhairappa will participate in discussions,” said Mahithosh Acharya.

The press meet was also attended by former MLA K. Raghupathi Bhat, Sri Puttige Math’s Ravindra Acharya, and Shripad Hegde C.
