Mangaluru, Sep 13: State Congress spokesperson Pratibha Kulai has accused the BJP of engaging in caste politics over the Pilikula Kambala event. She criticized former MUDA president Ravishankar Mijar for falsely claiming that the district administration had insulted MLA Umanatha Kotian by not inviting him to the prelude meeting of the Pilikula Kambala. Additionally, she condemned his attempt to frame the issue as an insult to the Billava community.
Speaking at a press conference in the city, Pratibha Kulai questioned the relevance of bringing caste into the matter, asking, "What is the connection between Pilikula Kambala and the Billava community? How is it appropriate to use casteism in this situation?" She clarified that MLA Umanatha Kotian had indeed been invited, explaining that the deputy commissioner (DC) had called Kotian, but he did not answer. An SMS invitation was subsequently sent, and the Kambala committee also extended an invitation.
Kulai further criticized the BJP for its lack of support during its time in government, stating that no initiatives were taken to develop Pilikula. She emphasized that the current government is working to revive tourism in Pilikula through events like Kambala, and instead of cooperating, BJP leaders are engaging in caste politics.
She also recalled an earlier incident when BJP leader Jagadish Adhikari made derogatory remarks about the Billava community and respected figures like Koti Chennaya and Janardhan Poojary. Kulai pointed out that the same people who are now raising caste issues remained silent at that time and did not remove Adhikari from his position.
Pratibha Kulai challenged MLA Kotian to reveal how much funding he had secured for Pilikula during his tenure. She added, "The DC does not need to personally visit the MLA's house to invite him for every event. The usual procedure is to call and inform. What kind of mentality expects the DC to make a house visit for every invitation?"
Congress leaders Neerajpal, Chandrahasa Rai, and Mohan Kotian were also present at the press conference.
