Bengaluru, Sep 14: A protest against the atrocities against women and children was organised by the Indian Christian Unity Forum and the Apostolic Carmel Sisters and institutions and by coalition of other organisations at the Freedom Park, Bengaluru advocating reforms in the legal system to ensure prompt and just responses to violence against women.

The members of the Indian Christian Unity forum, the staff and students of Sacred Heart teachers training institute, the staff and students of Carmel Convent PU College, the staff and students of St Antony’s Community College, CRI members and the representatives of all other Christian denominations took part in this protest unitedly.

The event began with a prayer led by pastor Harry Periera.

Brinda Adiga, the women activist spoke about the challenges and sufferings to women, caused by the male dominated society which hinders the empowerment of women and cuts down their capacity and ability to stand with confidence in the society. She also demanded that capital punishment be enforced for the heinous crimes committed against women and children.

Dr Sr Clarice AC principal, Sacred Heart teachers training institute, highlighted the surge in cases of rape, domestic abuse and other forms of violence against women. She also emphasised the need to raise our voices and fight for the cause of women who are the backbone of the society but sadly, treated as slaves in many parts of our county.

Fr Riju Vazhaparambil MSFS the president of CRI, Bengaluru requested all to join hands with those who are struggling to bring about a change in the society and stand against harassment and violence against women.

Manohar Chandraprasad spoke about the constitutional rights and the need to protect them and live by them.

Rtn Prof Emeritus Dr John Ebenezer, in his message appealed the students to stand for their rights as women and establish a just and peaceful society.

The participation of students was appreciated by all and they voiced out their concern for the future India and safe India. They also promised to stand for the rights of women and work for their empowerment.

Anthony Vikram, the president of the Indian Christian Unity Forum and director of KMDC compered the programme, urging all to stand united for this cause, to bring justice to the victims of violence and develop a civilization of peace and equality.

The event was a clarion call to demand justice and to safeguard the rights of women and also to bring the critical issues which are on the increase, to the forefront.
