DGCA Lists Mangalore Airport Among 11 Most Unsafe in Country

New Delhi, Nov 25 (IANS): A year-and-a-half after the tragic Air India crash, Mangalore Airport has earned the tag of being among the most unsafe airports in the country.

The government said that it had identified 11 airports which posed a safety risk to flight operations in the country. The safety aspects of these airports have been enhanced.

"Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has identified 11 airports which were considered critical airports from flight operations point of view," Civil Aviation Minister Vayalar Ravi said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.

The airports are: Leh, Kullu, Shimla, Port Blair, Agartala, Lengpui, Calicut, Mangalore, Jammu, Patna and Latur.

"The airport systems, facilities and procedures were thoroughly reviewed by DGCA to enhance the safety of aircraft operations at these airports," Ravi said.

"Inspection of these airports was carried out by teams of officials from flight operations directorate and aerodrome standards directorate," he added.

The minister said that DGCA's several recommendations to enhance safety have been adopted in these airports.

"The following suggestions have been implemented -- provision of runway end safety area, ensuring proper markings on the runway and proper maintenance of the basic strip," he said.

To be honest the Mangalore airport is as safe as any other decent airport in India and has proved it for the last 60 years. May be it needs upgrade to sophisticated radars and other modern equipments. We know that the runway extension is under process. No one can prevent technical or pilot/human errors in any part of the world. It mainly depends on quality of maintenance/spares, pilot training programs and the prevailing conditions at the time of take off and landing. Simply commenting without any reason does not serve any purpose.

Nagesh Nayak, answer this question to yourself. How do you travel to your workplace, market, etc.? by car, by cycle, by lory, by bus or by walk? whatever your answer is, do you still use the same road inspite of knowing the fact that a lot of accidents have taken place in those roads?

Accidents can happen anywhere, anytime. eg: if there is a demise in a family/house, will that family demolish and rebuild the house & family?

Life is in danger all the time as long as one lives. Does not matter the place & time. So 'THANK GOD' for every moment in your life and stop judging others. Why take the burden of others sins? Be responsible for yourself and one day you will be transformed.
    God Bless!

    Mr nagesh nayak, bangalore,

I agree with your comments about security issues in this country. However you missed some important points.

    1. In 2001, all 500 MP's, Rajyasabha members & others were unsafe when Parliament attack happened. The people who can not protect themselves, can provide security to rest of the country?

    2. In 2008 a licensed pub was attacked in Mangalore. (girls were targeted by men which is not acceptable ethically )

    3. In 2009 a muslim student was beaten up for talking to Hindu girl near Mangalore. Similar incident happened recently in Puttur.

    4. In 2008 an innocent farmer was killed in golibar in Haveri for demanding the fertilizer supply. 'annadatana hottege gundu!'

All political parties failed to provide security one or the other way. Congress is worst. BJP is not less in that.

Moily sir... where are you..? Where is is your so called INT'L TAG Now...? Are the Elected leaders fooling the common man...?
It totally contradicts Moily sirs statement a week ago. What a shame and how long our honorable elected leaders shamelessly used to play with commonman's life.....?
Again I would like to bring notice of Moily sir that Sub-sized Runway, Connecting pavements (stretch of potholes) to terminal & the sub-standard staff at airport are the main culprits.

    Hi,
The last accident having been accepted as a human error, I remember hearing it from a pilot friend that Mangalore air strip is the best having been given the location / the terrain etc.
Like as you read, the other airports mentioned too, they are all in remote areas etc...
So well it is best for a committee to decide whether it is best to continue here at Bajpe which is close to the city etc. or have it somewhere far away with open space at disposal.
Guess such thoughts have been gone through and hence its been decided to continue at the Bajpe airport.
    Kind Regards

If The D.G.C.S. finds that there are eleven airports in he country which are unsafe for landing and take-offs how is it that the this authority permits functioning of these airports. It is expedient that all hurdles are set right before allowing the planes are allowed to land or take-off. The families of the victims of the last Air India crash are still in a state of shock. It is therefore extremely important and necessary for the DGCA to ensures that he gets into action in this respect.

This announcement is going to be a step backward in this direction and for Moily's Astrology or Bhavishyavani.

It is true that these politicians are giving statements to gain a political mileage and now credibility of Mr. Moily is at stake as he promised to give an international Status to this table top Airport. It is so unfortunate that we Mangaloreans scare for our life while landing at Mangalore Air port. Wake up authorities and do something for the safety of Air port so that the people of Mangalore to be proud of.

Let us not forget that the accident last year was due to the fact that the pilot landed in the middle of the runway which could have ended up in disaster at any airport around the world. Moreover it was the LOUSY Air India plane. Indian Airlines have been landing there - even on the shorter older runway - for 60 Years without a single accident.

You need to be positive and leave everything in the hands of God. My relatives and friends earlier use to take lot of trouble to reach Mangalore from their destinations. Because of one incident, you should not label it with negative note (UNSAFE)and we may lose our facility.Mistakes are for learning and to provide better solutions. As per your earlier report Air India crash was the result of pilot error and not the airport.

I think the airhostess should start auctioning one single garland to the highest bidder on board the aircraft (something like how they do in ladies bar), and then the winning passenger should be able to personally garland the pilot after he successfully lands in mangalore.

I think this is a great idea for Air India, Kingfisher and other cash starved airlines to generate some income for the airline.

If the pilot makes a rough landing and applies too much brake and jerking effect, then he should be slapped like Sharad Pawar by the winning garland bidder for scaring the passengers.
