Media Release

Dubai, Oct 1: United Pangalites (UPA), which last year commemorated 20 years of its founding, celebrated Monthi Fest 2024 in a vibrant gathering at Smana Hotel in Bur Dubai on September 15. The event, held in honour of the Nativity of Mother Mary, brought together over 120 enthusiastic Pangalites and guests, highlighting the strong community bonds and rich cultural traditions of the Pangalite diaspora in the UAE.

The event opened with a heartfelt welcome speech, followed by a delightful prayer dance performance by the children of UPA members, setting a joyous tone for the celebration. A charming procession of children carrying flowers then circled the beautifully adorned statue of Infant Mary (Monti Saibin), infusing the event with a sense of devotion and innocence.

The gathering engaged in a prayer session that evoked a deep sense of reverence. Traditional Konkani hymns, including Sokkod Sangatha Meliya and Moriek Hogolsia, resonated through the venue as the children lovingly presented flowers to Infant Mary, embracing the spirit of Monthi Fest. The blessed Novem was distributed, marking the official start of the festivities.

The event was emceed by UPA children, Christon D’Souza and Viola Alva, who kept the crowd engaged and energized throughout. The celebration was graced by Joseph Mathias, the main coordinator of St Mary’s Mangalorean Community (SMMC) and managing director of Merit Freight Systems in Dubai, UK, and Mangaluru, as the distinguished guest. Additional esteemed guests included our well-wishers Nelson Rodricks, Dayan D’Souza, and Ronald Fernandes. UPA president, Sweeny D’Souza, extended a warm welcome to the dignitaries and all attendees, while UPA treasurer, Sohan Castelino, presented a detailed report on the organization’s charitable initiatives and accomplishments over the past year.

Adding to the excitement, Sohan also organized fun and engaging spot games, which brought laughter and joy to the audience. A lively housie game was another highlight, drawing enthusiastic participation from attendees of all ages and adding to the festive spirit. UPA members further entertained guests with energetic dance and skit performances, showcasing the creativity and talent within the community.

In addition to the lively cultural programme, UPA announced an upcoming drawing competition for children, a highly anticipated event aimed at encouraging creativity and participation among the younger generation.

Guests were treated to a delicious vegetarian feast, featuring the traditional 'Novem Jevaan', complete with the dessert, vorn, bringing a nostalgic taste of home to the celebration.
