Udupi, Nov 28: The local variety of brinjal widely grown across the district and popularly known in the vernacular as ‘Mattugulla’ was awarded the GI Certificate by the Geographical Indication Registry of the union government, in Chennai.

The Certificate GI Number – 100 and Certificate number – 158 was presented to the Mattugulla Growers’ Union by the state horticulture department here on Saturday November 26.

The indigenous variety of Mattugulla is grown on about 500 acres of land in the coastal district, especially at Mattu, Kaipunjal, and Pangala that comes under Kaup legislative assembly constituency.  The peasants grow Mattugulla along with paddy in their farms, to supplement their income.

The peasants staged a struggle to sustain their indigenous variety of Mattugulla when the Indian variety of brinjal was under threat from the BT in the country.  The growers united to seek GI Certificate from the union ministry.

Peasant leaders Ram Rao and Laxman Mattu thanked the union ministry for issuing the GI certificate to their local variety of brinjal.

Green brinjals, smaller in size, available here in the United States and they tastes very close to Mattu Gulla. I believe, this variety is imported from Italy. BTW, who brought tomatos to India?

Mattu Gulla Got really unique taste. Earlier i was not eating brinjals at all. In SVS Katpadi, usually the afternoon lunch dish was mattu gulla, from there i started eating and liked it very much. really a good taste of its own. Here in Kuwait, we eat Mushakhil(Khaboos) with brinjals, thinking of mattu gullas. Happy to see the mattu gullas got recognition from ministry.

Langoolacharya., Belman/USA, yes even i am surprised to see the dislikes. Seems people are too polarized, even the slightest of religious catalyst invokes them to press the dislike tab. Strange but true. Really sad.

Whenever mother used to prepare 'mattu gulla' sambhar on a Sunday, she used to double the quantity of rice cooked..so much was the demand for this tasty vegetable sambhar, as it is good as plain vegetable as well. It is unique...we could see rows after rows of these gulla plants on the way to the sea shore...close by. The person looks like 'Adhikari'..hope to see u next year.

There is a 500-year-old fable on the origins of this delicious vegetable. People in Mattu believe that seer Vadiraja of Sri Krishna Mutt had bestowed on their ancestors a palmfull of mud that eventually turned into seeds. Thanks Daiji for beatiful draft.
