Udupi, Nov 12: The diocese of Udupi mourns the loss of Fr Dr Lawrence C D’Souza, a devoted priest, visionary leader, and compassionate pastor, who passed away early morning on Tuesday November 12 at Father Muller Medical College Hospital in Mangaluru. Fr Lawrence, aged 75, had been courageously battling illness for several years, and he peacefully returned to his creator surrounded by prayer and love.

Born on November 28, 1948, in Pernal (diocese of Udupi), Fr Lawrence was the son of the late Casmir D’Souza and the late Regina D’Souza. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 5, 1977, after completing his philosophical and theological studies at St Joseph’s Seminary in Jeppu, Mangaluru. He held a bachelor’s degree in theology (BTh) and was academically gifted, also earning a bachelor of science (BSc), a master’s degree in philosophy (MA), and a degree in law (LLB). Additionally, he pursued a doctorate (PhD) in ‘Administration and Supervision in Church-Related Institutions’ from Fordham University, USA, furthering his expertise in ecclesial leadership and administration.

Throughout his ministry, Fr Lawrence served with distinction and dedication, taking on roles that allowed him to touch the lives of countless individuals. His assignments included:

• Assistant priest at Holy Cross Church, Kulshekar (1977-1979),

• Secretary of the Catholic Board of Education (CBE) (1984-1992),
• Administrator of Father Muller Medical College Hospital, Mangaluru (1998-2006),
• Parish priest of Holy Cross Church, Cordel-Kulshekar, Mangaluru (2006-2008),
• Director of St John’s National Academy of Health Sciences (2008-2014),
• Secretary of the Catholic Education Society of Udupi (CESU) (2015-2018),
• Rector and parish priest of Milagres Cathedral, Kallianpur (2018-2020).

A man of tremendous ability and faith, Fr Lawrence was known for his exceptional leadership and administrative expertise. He combined his intelligence and skill with a pastoral heart, becoming a source of strength and guidance for those he served. As a leader, he brought both vision and compassion to every position he held, notably in healthcare and educational institutions where he served as a devoted administrator. His time at Father Muller and St John’s National Academy of Health Sciences, Bengaluru showcased his dedication to compassionate care, while his tenure in Catholic education helped shape the formation of countless young minds in faith and integrity.

After four decades of tireless service, Fr Lawrence retired from active ministry in 2020 due to ill health and had since resided at Milagres Home for the Retired Priests in Kallianpur. Even in his retirement, he remained a source of inspiration and wisdom to those around him.

Fr Lawrence will be fondly remembered for his deep spirituality, gentle demeanour, and commitment to the welfare of his flock. His contributions to the diocese and beyond are lasting testaments to his love for God and His people. We are incredibly saddened to hear the passing of Father Lawrence. My family and I had a great honor to know him over decades of friendship. He was very warm hearted, had a passion for education, and selfless in his drive to serve the communities. While he is known for devoted time in Mangalore, Bangalore, Udipi & Kallianpur, we were lucky to have his presence in New York when he was completing his PhD @ Fordham University. Fr Lawrence provided great strength, spiritual guidance and even babysat my daughters. We will misss his friendship, his smile and positivity. My heartfelt condolences to the Bishop and Priests of Udupi Diocese. When he first posted to Kulshekar Parish as assistant parish priest, he was the great support for us youth of the parish and being member of the CYM, we were active in setting up the stage for church functions and other church activities. Once doing this I had fall from height and he has taken me to Fr. Mullers for treatment. Since then he served in many reputed church establishments and I met him in Dubai twice and in Kulshekar church when he was parish priest and last met him in December 2022 in Udupi during my nice marriage. Very jovial, understanding individual and efficient administrator. May his soul rest in peace.

I felt very sad at the demise of Fr Lawrence D'Souza, whom I have known from my younger days as he was Assistant Parish Priest in Kulshekar and was Director of CYM in the parish. Subsequently, I came to know and used to meet him when he was in St John's Medical College Hospital and later moved to Udupi Diocese, as he originally hails from the Diocese. I know he also served in the Fr Muller's Hospital Kankanady of Mangalore Diocese. A very able, capable and knowledgeable person. I wish the CBCI had continued the services of Fr Lawrence as Director of St John's Academy of Medical Sciences or utilised his service better in the CBCI commission.

Fr. Lawrence was my Guardian Angel and savior, ( along with Late Fr. Dr. Baptist Menezes ) during some crucial and critical phase of my Business journey . Donnet & I, will be ever grateful to this Noble Priest, a guiding light and selfless support in our lives. We are glad we had you in our lives & we met you during your illness. He was an able administrator, with unwavering and dynamic Principles in life. A Priest with a difference. His passing is a great loss to our Community and society at large. But. the consoling fact is that he is relieved of his suffering and pain that he has been going through for long now. May his noble soul rest in peace with his creator and enjoy his eternal life. You will always live in our hearts.
