Mangaluru: Two-way road construction to begin on Charmady Ghat in Jan 2025

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Nov 24: The much-awaited construction of a two-way road on Charmady Ghat is expected to begin in January 2025, provided land acquisition and permissions from various departments are completed on time.

The construction contract has been awarded to SLV Construction (CHNV Reddy), which won the bid by offering a 41% lower price than other competitors. The upgraded road will match the width of the Punjalakatte to B C Road stretch, which is 10 meters wide. Currently, parts of Charmady Ghat are just 5.5 to 7 meters wide.

The Centre has allocated Rs 343 crore for the project, with Rs 175 crore earmarked for roadwork. The remaining funds will be used for other expenses.

The stretch at the beginning of Charmady Ghat, covering approximately 900 meters, is surrounded by houses and private land, which will need compensation. In addition, electricity poles and water pipes will have to be relocated, adding to the overall cost.

Of the 25 km stretch of Charmady Ghat, 11 km falls under Dakshina Kannada district, while the rest is in Chikkamagaluru district. Approval has been granted for work on the section under Dakshina Kannada until the 12th bend. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the remaining stretch in Chikkamagaluru is still in progress.

Capt Brijesh Chowta, MP for Dakshina Kannada, said, “Upgrading Charmady Ghat will benefit commuters in the coastal region immensely. Additionally, increased goods transportation will foster business growth.”

According to the current timeline, the project should be completed within 48 months. The work is expected to begin wherever possible, although traffic disruptions, including possible closures of the ghat for up to two months, are anticipated.

Conservator of Forests Antony Mariappa mentioned, “The counting of trees and plants along Charmady Ghat for the development project is yet to be done. Once the contractor submits an appeal, the land and trees that will be affected will be assessed.”

41% lower bid and our Govt people may not even have knowledge to understand why the quote is 41% lower than others.....we will end up with a bad quality road eventually....tenders should be priced between lower and upper limit. Anyone who overshoots these limits should be disqualified unless he gas a innovative explanation for the bid being so low.

I have been travelling these roads frequently atleast once a week in order to avoid the other route and God save the common people. Charmadi was slighlt better now expect both routes to be poor for travel We are already suffering travelling in shiradi ghat. Mani stretch is hopeless. Now the alternate route is also being dug up without thought on easing commute. Post this another proposal of expressway in shirdi, I don't see work being completed until 2035

Charmady Ghat is very narrow at many places, hence this road development was very much required. Hoping they are able to complete this work on time. Thanks to our MP for implementing this project.
