Bangalore: Govt Wants to Whitewash Criminal Cases, Alleges Bhardwaj

Bangalore, Dec 19 (PTI): Karnataka Governor H R Bhardwaj today accused the government of adopting delaying tactics in appointment of a new Lokayukta to ''whitewash'' criminal cases and questioned the consultation process in recommending the name of S R Bannurmath to head the anti-corruption watchdog.

Asked if the Government is indulging in deliberate delay, Bhardwaj told reporters, "This will be explosive material if I speak about the motives. Is there any doubt about what Santosh (Hegde, a former Karnataka Lokayukta) said yesterday?. All these motives, this is just to help those criminals."

"If the Lokayukta comes and whitewashes these crimes, then what will you do?" he said when asked if a "head-less" Lokayukta would "help" the state government.

Bhardwaj also alleged that the government had recently transferred "good officers" from the Lokayukta institution.

"And now they want to whitewash all these cases which have been brought out by the Commission (Lokaykta report on illegal mining)," he said.

The government had recommended the name of Bannurmath, a former Chief Justice of Kerala High Court, to head the Lokayukta but the Governor questioned the recommendation, citing allegations against Bannurmath that surfaced in sections of the media.

The government in recent weeks indicated that it's firm on its choice and maintained that there are no documents before it suggesting wrong-doing by Bannurmath.

"I don't want to put on record wrong things about a former Chief Justice (Bannurmath). I will give you the Supreme Court judgement against the gentleman. But I don't want to say publicly because he is a former Chief Justice. Government should earn a good reputation by giving another name," Bhardwaj said.

Bhardwaj said the government never considered the name proposed by Leaders of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly and Council and never pointedly asked for their opinion on Bannurmath.

The government never conveyed (to them) that they will appoint so and so. The consultation has to be effective, otherwise it's a ritual, he said.

"Call everybody (do the consultation process again). They want a meeting. It's attitudinal change that's required," he said, adding, "I am determined to see a proper man succeeds Hegde. That's it.

"Delay is not because of me. Delay is when you don't appoint a proper person in proper place. It's their (government's) reputation which is suffering. If they say we insist on this man, that itself is not a good matter," the Governor said.

He claimed that Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda was under "certain compulsions" to insist on Bannurmath, indirectly referring to former Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa.

Shashidhara, Surathkal. Are you doubting on Justice Hegde who joined back after Advani requested him to come back?Do you think Yeddy and other BJP sharks would let him free if the names go missing in the final report?. The BJP has lost the moral in the state .The important achievement of the BJP is giving birth to the fourth competitor in the assembly. The Next assembly election there would be four partners. 1-congress-2-JDS -3-BJP and 4- Sriramulu. No doubt that No.4 and JDS will join and take outside support of congress and form state government.

All: The comments here says only the BJP members are corrupted. Why dont we have investigations against Krishna, Dharam singh etc etc? in the intermediatory report of mining Mr. Hegde mentioned Krishna and Dharam's name.. But why it is missing in the final report. When the Gov asked to investigate abt mining for last 10 years why hegde did that only after 2007? any particular reasons? If we say State Govt is corrupted then what abt the central Govt. It is non corrupted. if so then what abt 2G Scam andother scams happened over the time?

Who said BJP govt in Karnataka doesnot want Lokayukta. They want one who is always supportive of them, only probe issues of former CMs, never bother day to day looting of present ministers. It is their term to loot so don't disturb. Allow them to do any mining, real estate or any thing. It is the Gujarath model. Have Lokayukta building with bold sign board but never an office and officer. Then blame Governor.

When the Governor says it is true not because he is a congress man, as always been accused by the BJP. The govoernment wants to justify corruption and to dilute the Lokayukta system. They talk one thing and act in the opposite and it is a true phenomenon. If they can't spot a clean judge do they mean all the judges of the past were corrupt?

It is easy to call him as UPA agent but if you read here what he says and read the earlier statements he made about appointment of Lokayukta then what ever the government doing is strange. The government is playing with oil and fire when the next assembly election is just less than two year.
Why not ask Justice Hegde to work for another five years?.
