Mangaluru, Dec 13: A group of 80, including 71 students and 9 faculty members from St Aloysius (Deemed-to-be University), recently embarked on an enriching five-day International exposure programme to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from December 2nd to 8th. This educational tour was designed to enhance students' global perspectives, promote cross-cultural learning, and provide valuable academic exposure in various fields.
The vice chancellor of St Aloysius (Deemed-to-be University), Dr Praveen Martis, SJ, expressed full support for this initiative, emphasizing the importance of international exposure in shaping well-rounded, globally aware students. He stated, "This international study tour is a significant step towards preparing our students to thrive in an interconnected world. The experience and knowledge they gain from such interactions with top-tier academic institutions and industry experts will be invaluable to their future careers."
Visit to Hariot Watt University, Putrajaya
On December 6, the group visited Heriot Watt University in Putrajaya, Kuala Lumpur, where students toured the campus and engaged in discussions with faculty members. A special lecture on sustainable development was organized, and Dr Praveen Balakrishnan Nair delivered a thought-provoking session on Malaysia's unique pedagogical approach to sustainability: "Use-produce-re-generate." His insights on the negative impact of consumerism and strategies to combat global warming helped students develop a deeper understanding of sustainability in the modern world.
Exploring MONASH University
The next day, on December 7th, the group visited Monash University, Kuala Lumpur, where they participated in a campus tour and interacted with faculty members. The university experts shared best practices and provided an overview of the programs offered at Monash, giving the students valuable insights into higher education in an international context. The experience allowed them to explore academic options and fostered greater awareness of global educational standards.
Educational visits to The Belice chocolate kingdom factory and Royal Selangor Pewter design factory
The programme also included immersive visits to two iconic cultural and industrial sites in Kuala Lumpur. On December 5th, the students visited The Belice chocolate kingdom factory, an educational chocolate-themed attraction where they learned about the entire chocolate-making process—from bean to bar. The students gained hands-on experience in chocolate crafting and learned about the ethical practices in the industry, enriching their understanding of the art and science of chocolate making.
Later that day, the group toured the Royal Selangor Pewter Design Factory, the world's largest pewter manufacturer. The students were introduced to the intricate process of pewter crafting, with experts explaining the traditional techniques behind the production of tableware, gifts, and accessories. This visit broadened students’ knowledge of manufacturing processes and craftsmanship, as well as the cultural significance of pewter in Malaysia.
A Step Towards Global Learning
The International exposure programme not only allowed students to explore academic and industrial environments in Malaysia but also exposed them to a rich cultural experience. By visiting two renowned universities and industrial sites, the students gained practical knowledge and fostered a global mindset, an essential quality in today’s interconnected world.
The vice chancellor’s support for this trip reflects the university's commitment to providing students with comprehensive learning experiences beyond the classroom. St Aloysius (Deemed-to-be University) remains dedicated to fostering global leaders who are well-equipped with the skills and knowledge to contribute meaningfully to the world.
