Mangalore, Dec 25: Nearly 200 orphans from five different orphanages in the city were celebrated Christmas at Fatima Retreat House on Sunday December 25.

Among the participants were 18 orphans from Bhagini Samaj, 29 from Zeenath Baksh, Bunder, 59 from Infant Mary, Kulshekar, 53 from Bal Yesu Nilaya, Mary Hill, and many other orphanages.

The celebration with orphans was organized under the guidance of Fr Ronnie Prabhu, director, Fatima Retreat House.

The programme started with prayer by the children of Bal Yesu Nilaya, Mary Hill, and Fr Prabhu launched the event by lighting the lamp.

Fr Francis D’Souza, assistant director, Fatima Retreat House, welcomed and delivered the Christmas message. Lilly Miranda, Jeppu, a retired teacher, compered the programme.

On this occasion, a colourful and meaningful entertainment programme was conducted with each group of children presenting their cultural talents through songs, dances, skits, and many other activities. Anil D’Souza of ‘Jesus Youth’ and his team organized the group games which the children played happily in 12 groups.

Later, Fr Prabhu distributed prizes to each participant. Every child was presented with a school bag and a pack of candies sponsored by donors.

Ligoury Fernandes organized this programme. Ronnie Saldana as Santa Claus had the children excited and brought forth peals of laughter.

Every time we see the photographs of Fatima Retreat House with so many colourful and inspiring events, our memories flash back several decades to the barren hilly place right in our humble neighbourhood, that was pleasantly transformed one fine day by a bull-dozer that changed the hilly rugged place into a place of worship and a place of spiritual, Educational and social center patronized by thousands of Christians, young and old each, year.

One Fr. Lettilier SJ., and then Fr. George Albuquerque SJ, master-minded this place with a beautiful shrine in honour of "Lady of Nityadar" surrounded by 14 Stations of the Cross. Thanks to the Jesuits for their exemplary vision and foresight that has brought so much of glamour and pride for our beloved Mangalore which we still consider our "real home".

Our grateful thanks go out to Fr. Ronnie Prabhu, Fr. Ravi Santosh, Fr. Rasquinha, and many others for bringing so much of pride and honour for our home town. Our departed parents and our family members have fondly embraced Fatima Retreat House as "our house".

When we visited Fatima in Portugal not too long ago, we placed the Fatima Retreat House right in front of our mind and eyes, and we prayed so much with our Lady to give continued peace, prosperity and unity for Mangalore so that our community may continue to thrive and be a role model for many other communities in India.
