Bangalore: Father of Kannada Detective Novels N Narasimhaiah Dies at 87

Daijiworld Media Network – Bangalore (SP)

Bangalore, Dec 26: N Narasimhaiah, who had captivated the interests of a generation of Kannada readers with his unique style of narrating detective stories through novels, and who was known as ‘Sherlock Holmes’ of Karnataka, passed away in a private hospital here on Sunday December 25 afternoon, due to massive heart attack. He was 87 (18.9.1925). He had been battling for life since the last about three years.

He is survived by wife, three sons, and a daughter. Although Narasimhaiah earned lot of fans, his monetary earnings were meagre, and his books were low-priced. The prolific writer’s family faced financial problems in later years, and reportedly survived on Rs 1,000 monthly pension he used to get from the government.

Narasimhaiah, who was rightly known as the father of detective novels in Kannada, had penned over 550 detective novels, and over 50 social novels. ‘Pattedara (detective) Purushottama’, after the detective-cum-hero of most of his novels, was the first of his novels to be published in 1952. He also gave birth to three other detectives, ‘Pattedara Madhudoodana’, and ‘Pattedara Arinja’. People used to await publication of his novels, and Narasimahaiah used to keep the readers on tenterhooks till the last page of his novels. His novel, ‘Bhayankara Bairagi’, was reprinted eight times.

Narasimhaiah, who could not continue his education beyond fourth standard because of abject poverty and loss of father, shifted to Chikmagalur, native place of his mother, and started to work as bus cleaner when he was 14. He worked as bus conductor also, before starting work for a lorry service company in Bangalore. He married Nagaratnamma in 1947. During all these times, he never let go of the habit of reading, and began to write his own novels. He had won several honours including the felicitation he received at Kannada Sahitya Sammelan at Davangere in 1992, Attimabbe Foundation honour in 1992, and Karnataka Rajyotsava Award in 1997.

State law minister, Suresh Kumar, MLA, N L Narendra Babu, MLC, Hanumantaiah, former MLA, Vatal Nagaraj etc were among those who paid their last respects to the deceased.

He was A James Hadley Chase type detective novel writer. I could never take more than 2to3 hours to complete the reading of his novels. Always craving for more and more. But I feel sad that he could not make enough money to live a worldly life. He has lived and is still living in the hearts of his fans I mean his readers.

It is so sad to note the fate of dedicated artists. I thought such sufferings are meant only for ex Olympic players or drama artists. I too cultivated the habit of reading novels because of him when I was a teenager (now i am 56). Its high time govt does something to ensure such situation does not arise to similar good artists. May his soul rest in peace. I have decided to read some of his novels again !!!

It is sad to lose such a fantastic writer and very sad to know that in spite of writing over 500 books, his economic condition was very bad and he had to depend on a meagre government pension. I don't remember how many of his books I have read during my student days, which were superb. Whenever I started to read his books, I was getting glued to them and finding very difficult to be separated from them. Once I was reading one of his books and could not keep it aside until late night and I had to go to bed early morning, that resulted in severe headache next morning, not to mention I had to skip from going to school that day.

It is surprising to know that N. Narasimhaiah hardly had any school-education and in spite of that he became a prolific writer. The adage “where there is a will, there is a way” is very much true.

May his soul rest in peace.

May his soul rest in peace. Very sad to read about what the writer undergone as a teenager.

Months have taken to get rid of my fear after reading 'Bhayankara Pishachi'. I was afraid even to take a body bath in the night, thinking of the Pishachi. Vallu Peris (Dubai), former PYC member of Pompei Church, Kaikamba was at the receiving end for all the shoutings from my late mother for giving me the book to read.

Yes, N. Narasimhaiah was a great story writer. I remember my childhood days when a friend of mine and myself used to set aside little money that was given to us to spend and buy his books and read them. Those days the books were very very inxpensive.

We thoroughly ejoyed our childhood days by rading Narasimhiah's books. I was not aware that he was still alive. Great! May God grant his soul eternal rest is my prayer.

May his soul rest in peace...Heavnly god give courage to his family to overcome this sad moment.Salute to the great writer whose stories i grew up reading with, allways kept the readers on toe till the last episode.Great way of narrating the situation, specialy when he was describing the lady inthe story.
What a pity about the way he had to spend his elderly days inspite of so much fan following,so many awards to his creditand merely a pension of Rs.1,000/-a month.Any where else in the world he would have treated as a HERO for the happiness ha has given to the suspense readers.

Though I enjoyed reading his many books in my student day's, I never knew the background of ‘Sherlock Holmes’ of Karnataka. His contribution in Kannada Detective novels remain unmatching. May god give strength to his family to bear the loss. Our society definately faulted in not recognizing his contribution and providing necessary support at his need.
