Mangalore, Dec 27: A 37-year-old lady died of burn injuries at SCS hospital here on Monday December 26 night, allegedly due to negligence of the hospital in her treatment.

Tanuja was admitted to the hospital's ICU after she suffered burn injuries ten days ago.

Tanuja had gone to her mother’s place in Kavoor to attend a ‘Kola’ ritual on December 16 evening. Next day, December 17 morning, she was about to pour rice into a vessel of boiling water, when her clothes caught fire and she burnt her legs. She was immediately admitted to SCS hospital in the city.

It is said that she sustained 25 percent burns, and that Rs 1000 had been paid as fees. Tanuja’s husband Thimmappa is a tempo driver from Kaana, Suratkal, and they have two children, a daughter studying in 9th std and son in PUC first year. Rs 5,000 was also paid by her sister’s husband to get her admitted to the ICU on urgent notice.

Tanuja's relative Balakrishna said that she was treated in ICU for four days and was shifted to the ward. Doctors treating her also assured them of discharging her within 2-3 days. On Saturday, an operation was conducted by the doctor to create new skin. However, after this operation she suffered severe pain in her stomach and abdomen. She also faced problems in excreting. The nurse is said to have attributed the pain to gastric trouble and advised her to change her posture while sleeping.

But on Monday night, the pain shot up to extreme levels and again she was shifted to ICU. She failed to response to treatment and breathed her last.

When Daijiworld contacted Dr Satish Bhat, he said that it is true that the family is unhappy, however, there was no negligence in treatment as alleged. As he was busy, he could not clarify the issue further.

A case has been registered in Kadri police station. The body has been shifted to Wenlock hospital.

I totally agree with Candle (Mangalore). Mostly even the serious cases are handled by interns and those doing PG whilst the main doctors are busy attending conferences or some other activities glued in their cabins. Recently I was witness to the angiography dept. of a reputed hospital in Mangalore where angiography is done by a set of 3 reputed doctors on "wholesale basis"!! The dept. during office hours looks like a fair!!! Here chances of mixup or mistake is very high as the procedure of going from one dept. to other, handling of reports, etc. is very rudimentary and highly prone to a mixup or major mistake!! There are so many new paramedical institutes that have sprung up in Mangalore which by money power are affiliated to leading hospitals. This type of colloboration is sure to reduce the efficiency and safety of the hospital setup!!!

    Hello Friends

Seriously some comments here crack me up. "not to international standard" " commercialised" etc. Hello, Healthcare is a 'business' unless you pay taxes like you pay in UK and EU to get high quality treatment for free. Private hospitals are 'businesses' so dont be surprised if they are referred to as an commercial entity.

While I don't rule out negligence, as I have insight into unpredictability of health care provision paradigms I will hold my judgement till more facts are out in the open. Till then peace and don't hang the doctors. Oh, of course, those who want international standard can travel to the hospital of choice abroad

I am surprised when I see so many dislikes on below comments Mr Henry got 79 likes which is awesome. i dont know what these 6 people mean to say against Henry's comment which 101% true and all other comments similar to his. Doctors are getting degree only to open hospitals and suck patients blood not to save them. this is not the first case. especially Govt. hospitals are not only poor people they have to fast one month, save that amount and go to private hispitals to get their treatment done which is not available in Govt sectors.

My condolences goes out to the bereaved family. An autopsy should be conducted on the body of the deceased to detrmine the real cause of death. If negligence or wrong treatment is proven through this procedure the doctors/nurses involved should face the legal process. Thier regisration/license to practise should be revoked and the hospital should be put on notice and asked to compensate for the death. In the meantime the public should refrain from making any unwarranted comments either on behalf of the doctors/hospital or the affected family. The authorites should act immediately and order the necessary investigation to avoid such incidents in the future.

Hi Mortein, Who is to pass judgement against a medical callousness. But on the face of it it clearly appears to be a case of medical negligence. The case which I have cited which too happened 10 days back is damnigly clear wherein an otherwise healthy person went into coma and died a few days later after being injected with some substance just before a scanning procedure. Also, it is very difficult to prove cases of medical negligence in India as no doctor brother would go against a member of his own ilk. So, it is poor patient's family who has to suffer their entire life!!!

    People,

If this hospital is equiped to handle 25% burn injuries is first question....next comes if proper treatment was denied because lack of funds from patients side.

I would not like to jump to judgement here without geting answers to above questions.

Life is precious to everybody,,, rich as well as poor.

My condolences to the deceased family.

Sire, you are spreading rumours. As lord says half knowledge is worse than no knowledge. I would humbly suggest that you stop passing judgements as if you are the supreme authority in medical jurisprudence. No body is guilty till proven guilty. Now you won't like it if I say that you should be investigated for tax evasion and arrested even though I don't have a shred of evidence to prove my point. Hello?

God only knows what sort of skin restoring operation was conducted on this poor soul, which later on manifested as gastric ailment leading to her death. A thorough inquiry should be conducted and doctor responsible should be taken to task. Just a week ago, I heard of a patient admitted to a reputed hospital going into coma, he expired yesterday coz of severe allergic to a medication that was injected into him before a certain medical procedure

When did Health Care Hospitals became Industry? Since people feel that hospitals in India care more about money than patients, then it is time to send them to Bharain for treatment. Health care people in Middle east are very loving and caring and money is the last thing in their mind. God Bless them.

You right Mr. Crasta. Every department in this country is bending to the pressure of this community. This type of incidents will lead you anti-Godhra like reactions every where.
The Doctor and the Nurse should be immediately reinstated.

It could have been due to pencillin treatment or pencillin equivalent given following the graft.
Many people who are given pencillin without testing dose, could get into serious allergic condition including death.
All should be aware of that, in which case, people should ask only for antibiotics other than pencillin.
Pencillin though cheaper, should be avoided.

I feel when she compalined of chest pain it might have been due to some cardiac problem The nurse should have taken the matter urgently and should have taken measures o correct this problem instead of atrributing it to gastric trouble The guilty should be brought to hands of law and punished roaylly so that no one else rpeates this misatke again If you remember correctly the SCS was in news for wrong reasons over teh death of a pateint with appendix problem
