Mangaluru, Jan 2: Prime minister Narendra Modi’s visionary SuryaGhar scheme provides substantial subsidies, aiming to achieve a target of 30 gigawatts (GW) of power generation, according to Union Minister for Renewable Energy, Consumer Affairs, and Public Distribution Prahlad V Joshi.

Speaking at the inauguration of a workshop and interactive session on the prime minister’s SuryaGhar-Muft Bijli Yojana at the Kavoor Agricultural Cooperative Bank auditorium on Thursday, organized in collaboration with the Dakshina Kannada district administration, zilla panchayat, MESCOM, and Mangaluru City Corporation, the minister highlighted India’s progress in renewable energy.

India is poised to become the world’s third-largest economic power, surpassing China to earn the title of the "World’s Factory," Joshi stated.

He added that India is taking significant steps towards achieving self-reliance in solar power. Until now, battery production was largely dependent on China. If India achieves self-sufficiency in solar energy, it would mark a revolutionary transformation in the energy sector.

Current energy scenario

India has emerged as the fifth-largest economic power globally. The SuryaGhar scheme alone has set a target of 30 GW of power generation. Currently, the country produces 93.5 GW of energy, which includes 2.3 GW from solar power, 45 GW from wind energy, and the remaining from nuclear, hydroelectric, and other sources.

The government plans to produce 70 GW of energy from renewable sources, Joshi emphasized.

Climate challenges and renewable energy focus

India, along with the rest of the world, recorded its highest temperatures in 2024. Projections suggest that global temperatures will rise significantly by 2050. If the current trajectory continues, the country’s GDP and overall income could decline by 19%.

Joshi stressed the urgent need to address the impacts of global warming by reducing reliance on coal-based power and focusing on renewable energy sources.

(Currently, the country produces 93.5 GW of energy, which includes 2.3 GW from solar power, 45 GW from wind energy, and the remaining from nuclear, hydroelectric, and other sources.) The above data is false actually installed solar capacity is 93.5 GW not 2.3GW
