Udupi: Potholes and Pits Make Commuting on Honnala Road a Pain

Udupi, Dec 28: The Doopadakatte-Honnala road near Brahmavar is being used by thousands of vehicles every day. The road leads to prestigious educational institutions, hospital, commercial centres and others. The people want immediate repair of this wretched road, besides filling up a frightening pit that has formed by the side of the narrow road at Honnala.

The fisheries road from Uppinakote to Honnala was built about 25 years ago. In later years, the road also got widened till Kukkude Cross, but the stretch of the road near Honnala continued to cry for attention by way of upgradation and improvement.

In the recent past, this stretch of the road, which is 4.5 kms long, has started resembling a devastated battle field, with hundreds of potholes, peeled asphalted stretches, and eroded edges. The people have been urging the concerned to make the road motorable again, by undertaking urgent repairs to the entire road, barring the one km stretch near G M Vidyaniketan School, where paver finishing has been provided.

Starting right from national highway near Brahmavar, hospitals, temples, commercial centres, educational institutions etc are located on the road from Doopadakatte to Honnala. Thousands of vehicles including buses move about on this road routinely. The villagers want the money earmarked for this road development to be utilised early, so that they will be free from the worry of having to traverse this frightening road.

A pit that has been formed by the side of the narrow stretch of the road near Honnala appears to be awaiting a major accident to occur, and to gobble up lives. Negotiating this stretch of the road, on the other side of which a deep gorge is located, is a nightmarish experience, particularly after dusk. Brahmavar HMC founder, Shakil Honnala, Nagarika Hotara Samiti president, Chandrashekhar Shetty, Ratnakar Hegde, Nagaraja Shetty, Uday Poojary Honnala, Rahamath Honnala, Muneer Saheb, Ramesh Putran and many others, on behalf of the locals, have urged the concerned to take action on the above request at the earliest.

Mr. Sayed, Kaup, we have been hearing since ages that Brahmavar is going to be a Taluk, but when? No one knows the answer. State Govt is responsible for the repair of interior roads, but BJP is busy fighting their internal war, where they have time to look into the problems of laymen? They will come to your door before the next election.

Mangalore City Corporation Commissioner Harish Kumar K. said on 08.12.2011 that work on repairing Kulashekara-Shakthi Nagar Road would be taken up in 10 days. This road would be among the several bus routes in the 60 wards in the city where pothole filling work would be done. “This pothole filling work will definitely be of a better quality than works done earlier. If there are any problems about the quality, people are free to call me on my mobile (9945794353) and inform me,” Mr. Kumar said. - The Hindu

The corporation and the public works department (PWD) should show more responsibility in repairing roads. The Kerala high court has given deadline to NHAI, Corporation, PWD etc. to complete road maintenance work. Karnataka HC should adopt similar steps.

I don't understand why NH-66 from Talapdy towards Mangalore is so bad where as the road towards Kerala is quite good. One pathetic Manjeshwar-Kumbla stretch too is repaired and freshly laid. The road on both sides of Nethravati bridge is horrible. Our MP, Mr. Nalin Kumar, are you aware of this?

THIS IS THE KIND FAVOUR OF OUR KARNATAKA GOVT. BJP SHOULD REMEMBER THAT THEIR FUTURE IN POLITICS DEPENDS ON WHAT THEY DO TO THE PEOPLE AND NOT BY THEIR JHOOTE(FALSE) PROMISES.
