United States, Jan 6: Norovirus, a highly contagious virus known for causing vomiting and diarrhea, has seen a significant rise in the United States, becoming one of the most common infections. According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the winter vomiting bug is spreading rapidly, particularly during the colder months.
Dr Shubham Vatsya, senior consultant in gastroenterology and hepatology at Fortis Hospital, Vasant Kunj, explains that norovirus invades the gut lining, causing inflammation in the stomach and intestines, leading to symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and cramping. He further highlights that the prevalence of the virus increases in winter due to seasonal factors, with its peak occurring between November and April.
“During winter, people tend to stay indoors and remain in close contact with each other, raising the chances of person-to-person transmission. Additionally, low humidity levels allow airborne particles to linger longer, facilitating the virus's spread,” Dr Vatsya adds. Moreover, weakened immune defenses during colder weather and the virus’s ability to survive on non-living surfaces contribute to its rapid spread.
Causes of Norovirus:
1. Contaminated food and water: Consuming food or drinks from unhygienic environments is a primary source of infection.
2. Contaminated surfaces: The virus can survive on surfaces for up to 10 days, spreading when touched and then transferred to the face.
3. Person-to-person contact: Close contact with infected individuals, such as sharing utensils or towels, increases the risk.
4. Crowded, unhygienic places: Environments like weddings, schools, hospitals, and cruise ships with poor hygiene can amplify transmission.
Prevention tips:
1. Practice good hygiene: Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after using the restroom and before eating.
2. Wash food thoroughly: Ensure that food is properly cleaned, especially fruits and vegetables, and avoid eating at unhygienic restaurants.
3. Disinfect surfaces: Use bleach-based cleaners to disinfect high-touch surfaces in crowded spaces.
By adopting these preventive measures, individuals can reduce the risk of contracting norovirus, especially during its peak season.
