New Delhi, Jan 9: Mohammed Shami delivered a noteworthy performance for Bengal in their preliminary quarterfinal against Haryana during the Vijay Hazare Trophy on Thursday. The experienced pacer claimed 3 for 61 in his 10-over spell at the Moti Bagh Stadium in Vadodara, making a strong case for his return to India's national team.

Shami struck early by dismissing opener Himanshu Rana (14) in his first spell and later returned in the death overs to remove Dinesh Bana (15) and Anshul Kamboj. While his economy rate of 6.1 runs per over was on the higher side, his ability to bowl a full spell is a positive sign for his fitness.

Haryana posted a formidable 298 for 9, thanks to half-centuries from Parth Vats (62) and Nishant Sindhu (64), along with SP Kumar’s unbeaten 41 off 32 balls. Despite the challenging target, Shami’s efforts stood out as a highlight for Bengal.

The veteran bowler, who was sidelined after the 2023 ODI World Cup due to injury, has been working his way back through domestic cricket, featuring in the Ranji Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Persistent fitness issues delayed his international return, but his recent showing signals readiness for top-tier cricket.

With selectors set to announce India’s squads for the England series and the Champions Trophy, Shami’s performance could bolster his chances. However, final clearance from the BCCI’s medical team will determine his availability for selection.
